The Cricket Competitions Continued

SECOND HASTINGS ROUND COMMENCED.

TOMOANA LEADING WHAKATU.

The second round of the Hastings senior grade cricket competition was commenced on Saturday, when bowlers generally were in the ascendancy. Last year ’s champions, Tomoaua have secured a first innings lead of 52 runs, the bowling of Paterson (Whakatu), who took six wickets for 78, and Mitchell (Tomoaua), whose average was six for 44, being the outstanding features of the afternoon. Carr (Tomoaua)-made 43 and was the only batsman to show best form. Hastings, thanks to Geddis (42) and Watkinson (44), knocked up 155 against Old Boys, who, in reply, have lost five wickets for 73. In the junior grade, Rugby and Fruitgrowers enjoyed threepoint wins over Havelock North and Tomoana respectively, and Albion suffered an outright defeat at the hands of .Whakatu.

SENIOR GRADE

H. 5.0.8. V HASTINGS This game was commenced on Cornwall Park with Hastiugs batting first and making 155 runs, of which. Geddis 44 and H. Watkinson 42 were the best with the bat. Other double figure scores were made by Pohill 15, Chaplin 13 and Watkins 13. Bowling for Old Boys, Craven, who secured 3 wickets for 35 was the best. Others who took wickets were Knuckey 2 for 39 Brenton Rule 2 for 40 and Newdiek 1 for 22. With about one hour to go Old Boys commenced their innings and at the call of time had lost 5 wickets for 73 runs. Drake not out 13, was the only one to reach double figures. WHAKATU Tomoana won the toss and batted first to compile a handy score of 136. on the Nelson Park wicket. Of this total Carr secured 43 in a splendid innings before he was caught well by Love off Paterson. His score included 22 singles all nicely placed and four fours. Somerville was next best with 24. The best bowler for Whakatu was Paterson who took 6 wickets for 78 runs. Whakatu replied with 84, Parkes 21 and Probin 20 being the best batsmen. Mitchell was the best bowler for Tomoana with 6 wickets for 44 runs. Tomoana were 10 runs for no wickets, in the second innings when stumps were drawn. The details are as follow.— TOMOANA. JUNIOR GRADE. HAVELOCK NORTH v. RUGBY. Havelock in the first innings knocked up a good tally of 104, of which Huff secured 26, C. Liley 23 not out. anil Craw and Rogers 10 each. Bowling for Rugby, Pearson took two for 39, Campbell two for 13, Milne two for 28, W. Pearson two for 16, and Nelson two for none. made 17 and L. Wellwood 15. Bowling for Havelock, Craw took most wickets, his average being three for 26. The next best were Tunnieliffe two for 10 and L. Liley two for seven. FRUITGROWERS v. TOMOANA. Fruitgrowers batted first and brought their total up to 156, Crombie being the highest scorer with 40 not out. Renouf and Beuth, the opening batsmen, put on a useful 27 each, the next best being Craike with 15. Bowling for Tomoana Hyslop took six for 47 and Seed three for 52. Tomoana compiled 122 in their first strike, Heslop making 41 and Palmer 22 not out, Woon and Currie being next best with 13 and 10 respectively. Renouf took four wickets for 52 and Craike throe for 31. ALBION v. WHAKATU. Batting first Albion put up a good total of 121 (Goodall 20, Simmons 20, Henderson 26). The wickets fell to the bowling of Love junr., seven for 50, Bainbridge two for 14 and Hooper one for 30. Whakatu fared very badly against the deadlv bowling of Ball and Hatton and they could do no better than 25. Hatton took five for 12 and Ball four for 13. Whakatu followed on and this time did a little better, getting 81, but this was not sufficient to avoid an innings defeat. Bowling for Albion Hatton took six for 16. Albion won by an innings and 15 runs. GAMES AT NAPIER. SCOTT-KELLY SCORES CENTURY The commencement of the third series in the first round of the Napier senior competition matches revealed some fine batting performances. United have placed themselves in a sound position against St. John’s by knocking up 343 in their first innings. The honours of the day go to Scott-Kelly, playing for United, who delighted his spectators by scoring 140. This is the first century in senior cricket this season, and Scott-Kelly is to be congratulated on his fine performance of first-class batting. H. 5.0.8 have no easy task before them to defeat Technical 0.8., who have completed their first innings for 250. The former have so far lost two wickets for 35. SENIOR GRADE UNITED v ST. JOHN’S. United have placed themselves in a very sound position for a victory against St. John’s by knocking up a total of 343 runs in their first innings. The first century m senior competition cricket was obtained in this match when Scott-Kelly gave one of the most stylish batting displays yet seen this season. He knocked up 140 runs in about two hours, finally being caught behind the stumps by Fitzwater off Chadwick. Scott-Kelly gave very few chances and scored freely all round the wicket, his square and late cuts especially being delightful to watch. His score included 18 fours. The next highest score was that of Burns, with 47. The most successful bowler for St. John’s was Chadwick, who secured four wickets at a cost of 98 runs H. Hunter took three and Pawson one. St. John’s opened their first innings with half an hour to play before the drawing of stumps, at which time they had lost one wicket for 47 runs. In the first innings the former made 279 (Gladding 121), while the latter, continuing their innings from the previous Saturday, when three wickets had fallen for 176, made 258. The best display was given by Wyllie, who has batted extremely well for a newcomer to Napier junior cricket this season. He made 78, his innings including two sixes and eight fours. Stephenson, another newcomer this year, made 53 (one six and six fours), while Ewan made 36, Wordsworth 30, Brooks 15 and Downer 10 not out. For Old Boys Barlow took one wicket for 48, Smith two for 73, Gladding none for 30, Griffin three for 49 Wagg one for 22, Cox two for seven and Broad one for none H. 5.0.8. declared their innings closed when seven wickets were down for 110. The highest scorer was Swinburn, who made 47. R. Barlow made 22, Broad 16 and Cox 12. The successful trundlers for United were Wordsworth (one for 30), Seed (four for 53) and Wyllie (one for two). The team made a stern effort to score the requisite number of runs to gain a victory, but failed by 29 runs. Wyllie made 21 and Stephenson 12. For Old Boys Barlow took two for 32. Griffin five for 32 and Broad one for 22. SCINDE v TECHNICAL 0.8. Tn spite of obtaining a lead against Technical 0.8. on the first innings by 113 runs, Scinde were unable to follow up their advantage and were defeated by 41 runs. In their first innings Technical made only 71, while Scinde replied with 184. Continuing the match on Saturday, Technical gave a bright display in their second innings, making 269. Of this total, North was responsible for a brilliant 107. His batting was faultless throughout, his total including 19 fours. The next highest score was made by Brimer, with 39 not out .while Rees made 38, Elmes 26 and Vercoe 12. The bowling analysis for Scinde was as follows; Forsyth two for 26, Tyres none for 21, Sweeting four for 57, O’Brien none for 56, Moss one for 43, Bowland one for 40. Scinde were unable to make more than 115 in their second innings. Moss with 42 gave the best batting display. Ryan made 20, Tyers 18 and Kennedy and Olsen 10, the latter being undefeated. For Technical 0.8., Walker secured one wicket for 14, Grouden one for 21, Brimer none for 19, Champion none for seven, Rees five for 25 and Marcroft two foi 26. TARADALE v SWAILES. The Swailes eleven succeeded in gaining an outright victory against Taradale by 44 runs. In their first innings they made 126 and succeeded in disposing of Taradale for 83 In their second innings on Saturday afternoon Swailes made 123 (A. Swailes 40, Limlin 19, Davison and Blackledge 16 and E. Swailes 10) For Taradale Ellis took four wickets for 25, Duthie five for 33, Fayen one for four, Boggs none for 27 and F Wilson none for 14. In their answering knock Taradale made 122. Of this total Whitton made the highest score with 32. F. Wilson made 23, Boggs 15, H. Wilson 14 and Ellis 12. The wickets for Swailes were taken by Blackledge (three for 35), Swailes (one for 33), Davison (three for 25). Johnson secured no wickets for 13. HIGH SCHOOL v ST. JOHN’S. High School had no difficulty in defeating St. John’s by an innings and 20 runs. St. John’s owe their downfall to collapsing in their first innings, when the whole team was dismissed for 48 runs. High School declared when nine wickets had fallen for 197. In their second innings, St. John’s made 129. H. C. Barlow contributed 54 to this total, giving a forceful display and hitting two sixes and eight fours. S. Triggs' made 21, C. Hunter 15 and Thorne George 10 For High School, Mahony took one wicket for eight runs, Palmer one for two, Gahagan one for 28, Wilson none for one, Evans five for 46, Alexander none for 11, Braithwaite none for 19 and McPhee two for seven THIRD GRADE. TECHNICAL 0.8. v HIGH SCHOOL B. Technical 0.8. proved too strong a combination for High Schoo] (B) and achieved a victory by an innings and 101 runs. Technical batted first and declared when no wickets had fallen for 171. Pirie and Crozier remained undefeated at 100 and 71 respectively. High School (B) made 49 in their first innings (Hammond 24 not out). The Technical trundlers who took wickets were Doherty, (three for five). Crozier (1 for 11), Bowman (three for five), McKendrick (one for three), Kronk (one for none) and Dennison (one foi one) High School’s second innings proved even more drastic, for the total score was only 21, no-one obtaining double figure scores. Pirie and Doherty shared the wickets for Technical, taking three for 11 and six for 10 respectively. HIGH SCHOOL (A) v HIGH SCHOOL (C) A collapse in their first innings was the cause of High School (C) losing their match against High School (A), who won on the first innings. The A team battea’ first and declared when

one wicket had fallen for 179. The runs were made by Morley and McKenzie, who both gave splendid displays, making 100 not out and 74 respectively. The only wicket was secured by Robinson. In their answering knock the C’s made only 26 (Armitage 10). For the A’s Cox took three wickets and Quayle two. The C team followed on and saved an outright defeat by making 126. Robinson made top score with 23, while Brown made 22, Younghusband 20, Barlow 13 and Braithwaite 11. The wickets for the A’s in this innings were taken by Steed, Butler, Brown and Quayle, each of whom secured two.

CENTRAL H.B. CRICKET

COMPETITION MATCH RESULTS The Central Hawke’s Bay Cricket Sub-Association’s competitions were continued on Saturday, easy victories being accomplished by Te Aute and Eparaima over Old Boys and Takapau respectively. Takapau v Eparaima Eparaima having made 194 on the previous Saturday, and Takapau 54 in the first innings, were dismissed for 76 in the second innings. Eparaima thus won by an innings and 64 runs. Nelson, Canning and Douglas were the successful bowlers for Eparaima. Te Aute v Old Boys Te Aute declared their second innings closed with 47 for 2 wickets and Old Boys on going to the crease again fared disastrously, being dismissed for 29 runs, Guy 12, being the only player to show any form. Bowling for To Aute, Hunter took 5 for 11, Dwyer 2 for 0, and Thompson 2 for 3. Te Aute in spite of the declaration, won easily by 118 runs. JUNIOR GRADE, The junior grade practice fixture Waipukurau Old Boys v. District High School, played on Saturday, resulted in a win f.. the latter by 32 runs. In the first innings the school team scored 37, Old Boys replying with 41. The respective second essays produced 95 and 58. The principal run-getters for the winners were P. James (30), J. M. Reidy (16), C. Harris (14) and A. Wallis (13). For Old Boys Bliss (18), Tennant (11) and C. Crocker (10) were the most successful batsmen. James bowled well for the victorious side (four wickets for four runs), and Monteith (seven for 16) and A. Smales (three wickets) were responsible for Old Boys’ successes. MATCHES TN SYDNEY. SPOILT BY RAIN. Sydney, Dec. 6. Grade cricket was spoiled by rain and sodden wickets. Neale for "’estern Suburbs against Juniors took eight for 18. Guest for Waverley against Manly took four for 37.
