NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative.) At the meeting of the Waipukurau County Council on Saturday, the chairman (Mr A. C. Russell) moved a vote of sympathy with Mr H. T. Wright, the family of the late Mr Hector Speedy, Mrs G. Davies (Hatuma) and Mrs W. L. N. Lawrence (Hamilton), in their recent bereavements. The motion was carried in silence. At the monthly meeting of the Waipukurau County Council, held on Saturday, it was decided to nominate Mr A. Rowbottom for re-appointment as the council’s representative on the Howard Estate Advisory Board. At a special meeting of the Waipukorau Borough Council, to be held on the 15th inst., the resolution passed at a special meeting held last night as to borrowing £650 under the provisions of the Hawke’s Bay Earthquake Act 1931, for the purpose of carrying out the rapair of damage caused to borough services and works on February 8, will be submitted for confirmation. With the approach of Christmas, it is usual to look for a decrease in the number of patients in the hospital, but anticipations have not been realised this year. At nine o’clock on Saturday morning there were 95 patients in the ,Waipukurau Hospital, only one short of the record which was established on the day after the earthquake and which has been reached on two or three Occasions since. For this time of the pear, the board has more than the usual number of patients for its own district, while there are also 16 isolation patients from the Napier district. The secretary of the Waipukurau and District Red Cross Society, acknowledges a donation of 10/- from a well-wisher per Mrs W. A. Chambers, towards the Sanatorium Christmas fete. A most enjoyable euchre party, organised by Miss Skidmore for the purpose of raising funds for St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, was held on Thursday evening. There was a large attendance. The following were the prize winners:—Ladies, Mrs Bendeich 1, Mrs Wiggins 2; men. Mr J. O’Connor 1, Mr M. Murphy 2 ; consolation prizes, Mrs Guy and Father O’Donnel. A special competition was won by Mr V. L- King, the winning number being 101. A special feature of the evening was the dainty supper served by the ladies. To the chairman of the Waipukurau Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club, Mr B. L. Wallis, and the hon. secretary, Mr J. M. Reidy, in particular, Is due the success of the evening sports held on Friday. The other officials wore; Handicapper, Mr J. 0. Johnston: starters, Messrs A. D. Lynch and T. A. Nutt; judges, Rev. A. C. McLean, A. C. Rowe and P. R. Smyrk; referee, Mr A. C. Holms; lap steward and announcer, Mr F. R. Logan; track stewards, Messrs J. Bell, D. P. Dinan, 8. Peterkin and W. Phillips; call steward, Mr N. C. Wylie; time-keeper, Mr G. Smales; blackboard ateward, Mr J. Oaughley; gatekeeper, Mr R. Brassell; result steward, Mr 0. Williams.
