FORGED BANKNOTES
IN CIRCULATION AGAIN. POOR IMITATION OF ORIGINAL. Forged £1 banknotes are in circulation again. Four are said to have been cashed in the present week in Auckland. Many of these forged notes were passed last Easter' and a number of men were arrested m connection with their distribution. The four forged notes which have been accepted by shopkeepers this week bear the same number, “E 951885 and are poor imitations of the genuine Bank of New South Wales note of the same number. It was from this note that the forgeries were copied. The police state that from the complaints already received it seems that one man is at work, exchanging them for cash. His usual method is to purchase a small article worth about 6d, and obtain 19/6 in change. Shopkeepers are warned to examine £1 Bank of New South. Wales notes before they accept them. Ths original banknote, No. E 931885, is in possession of the police.
