THE LICENSING ISSUE
POLL AT NEXT ELECTION. The general election having been held ,the effect of the Licensing Poll Postponement Act may now be more definitely determined. The position is that a licensing poll will be taken at the next general election whenever that may bo. The first draft of the legislation proposed to postpone the licensing poll until the general election after December 31, 1933. Then the suggestion of prolonging the term of Parliament arose. The bill was therefore amended to provide that “a licensing poll shall be taken simultaneously with the second general election of members of Parliament to be held after the passing of this Act notwithstanding that the preceding Parliament may have been dissolved before it had been two years m existence.” As the bill was passed on August 29, and ono general election has now boon held, tho next will be accompanied by a licensing poll. In the ordinary course that will bo at the end of 1931.
