WHERE ARE THEY?
THE PRETTIEST GIRLS. Where are the prettiest English girls! asks the “Daily Mail.’’ It depends on what you mean by mean by prettiness. London is full of pretty girls, but, say the discerning, they are standardised like a beauty chorus. Liverpool is famous for pretty girls, so are Nottingham and Leicester, Birmingham and Leeds, but the prettiness of these town girls, if you believe the critics, is a simpering sort of prettiness that comes out in the wash. In other words, waved hair and “made” complexions will not stand the weather. Climate beats cosmetics. And who are the critics! The critics come from, or rather, remain in Monks Risborough, an old-world hamlet in Buckinghamshire, nearest station Princes Risborough, a cameo of the Chilterns. They say in Monks Risborough that their village-born belles may be few in number, but when it comes to beauty they make the Ziegfeld Follies look like a melting waxworks show. The girls of Monks Risborough, say they, are healthy girls with fine figures, long, flowing hair, gleaming teeth ,and complexions like wild roses. As an impartial observer I agree. The girls of Monks Risborough are pretty, and theirs is a prettincss that owes nothing to the chemist. A Monks Risborough girl can walk five miles over rough country in a rainstorm and turn up to tea looking like the model of a sports girl on the cover of a popular magazine. She has long hair and her complexion is like wild roses, and her eyes do shine like wet violets. At least the eyes of Fanny do; and the teeth of Millie would make a cinema star gnash her own in spiteful envy. Sony I am to say that the young men of Monks .Risborough do not appre-
ciate the beauty that belongs. They cycle to cinemas to gush over Greta Garbo and rave about Marlene Dietrich, when they have only to walk down their own village high street to see loveliness come from a cottage. They say in Princes Risborough that Monks Risborough is so called because the young men are slow to marry. But I’m afraid Princes Risborough is jealous.
