REVIVAL OF MINING

THAMES-COROMANDEL EFFORT. PROSPECTING SCHEMES. Wellington, Nov. 10. The Minister of Mines, Hon. D. Jones, said, in an interview yesterday, that in order to organise gold-prospect-ing as a means of relieving unemployment, Mr A. H. Kimbell, Under-Secre-tary of Mines, had visited Thames and Coromandel during the week-end. At Coromandel a largely-attended and enthusiastic meeting had been held and thirty-seven men had undertaken to prospect‘approved areas. Arrangements tor supervision had been made and the organisation would function immediately. At Thames three meetings had been held and a number of men were commencing work that day. Mr Jones said he had been advised that the consensus of opinion in the district was that the prospecting schemes arranged at Thames and Coromandel were the best effort made for many years to revive mining.
