NEWS AND NOTES. (Special Representative). Miss K. Ormond returned yesterday from Masterton . Mrs. W. B. Fisher entered Sister Anderson’s Hospital during the weekend to undergo treatment. Mrs. W. Lyons, of Waipawa, has entered the Waipukurau Public Hospital for treatment. Mr. and Mrs. Allan, of Dunedin, have been visiting their daughter, Mrs. Bates, the Manse, Takapau. Shearing operations are now in full swing throughout Central Hawke’s Bay. Among the stations concerned are Tautane, Braeburn, Oakburn, Motueka and those of Messrs. Speedy (3). At Tautane some 26,000 sheep are being shorn. At Porangahau and Papakihau stations operations are later than usual, not having commenced as yet. The wool this season is considered to be at least 25 per cent, better grown than last year. Mr. A. E. Jull, M.P., who had been invited to participate in the opening ceremony in connection with the N.Z. and Empire Week in Waipukurau, has telegraphed expressing regret at not being able to attend, owing to his Parliamentary duties. “Best wishes for a successful week” were expressed. The Waipukurau Chamber of Commerce Luncheon Club has arranged a function for Thursday at 1 p.m, in the Ruahine Tea Room. An address of special interest to businessmen will be the principal feature.

To-morrow afternoon, as will be the ease each afternoon throughout the week, an entertaining programme will be presented in the Municipal Theatre, but that day will be one of special concern to ladies. The Women's Institute, Ladies’ Auxiliary, and Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers’ Union have arranged a varied programme, including a cooking demon, stration by Mrs. J. K. Lee, on an electric range. At night a patriotic picture programme will be presented. On Thursday afternoon there will be a lecture for ladies.
