A mob of 500 Republicans gathered and attempted to rush the Unionist area. The police kept them off with baton charges until reinforced. Meanwhile Catholic families in the Protestant area and Protestants in Catholic districts were forced to abandon their dwellings. Extra police are patrolling in motor lorries keeping order in Portadown and other small towns. Publichouses were closed at 7 o’clock in the evening.
