IRISH RIOTING
CATHOLICS AND PROTESTANTS. FAMILIES FORCED TO ABANDON HOMES. “Times” Cable. London, Aug. 19. “The Tinies’ ” Belfast correspondent states that rioting was twice renewed at Armagh last night. A mob of 500 Republicans gathered and attempted to rush the Unionist area. The police kept them off with baton charges until reinforced. Later the Republicans attacked Head Constable Reid’s house and smashed windows. Meanwhile Catholic families in the Protestant area and Protestants in Catholic districts were forced to abandon their dwellings. Extra police are patrolling in motor lorries keeping order in Portadown and other small towns. Publichouses were closed at 7 o’clock in the evening. Employers nre threatening to close their factories in the event of further troubleThe Minister of Justice, Mr Fitzgerald Kenny, announces that tho Government of the Free State intends to stamp out the Republican Army and also stop illegal drilling.
