A Sydney cable states that Dame Melba's condition is very low and she is sinking. I The Mayor of Wellington, Mr. G. A. Troup, C.M.G., will be the official Reform candidate for the Wellington North seat at the next general election. Dr. A. C. Biggs, medical superintendent at the Napier Public Hospital, who has been recuperating at Palmerston North since the major earthquake, returned to Napier on Thursday. Mr. J. K. Hornblow, chairman of the Palmerston North Hospital Board, and Mr. A. J. Phillips, sec-retary-manager, passed hro.igh Hastings on Thursday afternoon en route to Napier, on business in connection with the treatment /nd care of earthquake victims. The visitors palled in ait the Waipuknrau Hospital and were very favourably impressed with the arrangements made for the earthquake patients in that institution. The mortal remains of the late Mr. Eustace Lane were conveyed to their last resting place at the Wairoa cemetery on Wednesday, being followed by a large gathering of friends representatice of the town and district. The service at tit. Paul’s and the graveside were conducted by Archdeacon Butterfield. At the church the hymn “When Our Heads are Bowed in Woe,” was solemnly rendered, the organist being Mrs. A. W. Hague, who also played a funeral dirge at the conclusion of the ceremony. Old friends of the deceased were the pall-bearers.
