OUR FOOTPATHS?.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The Hastings Borough Council has done quite a lot of footpath work recently, much of it being under the scheme for the employment of men on relief work—a very worthy object. The council must have given a lot of time and thought in planning out the footpaths that had to be formed but why they should pick on Lascelles street and put down' 18 chains of concrete . path I. cannot quite fathom. The portion that was done was already down. in bitumen, but this was taken up and the usual width ,of concrete laid, so that now it is a half and half affair, and where the concrete joins (or should join) the bitumen there is a strip of bare earth about a foot wide. This will make a splendid place for weeds and grass to grow and will mean one more stretch that will have to be cloaned from time to time by the council staff (perhaps). Surely there are many other places in the town where there are no paths at all (I can think of several) that could have been done without digging up a good bitumen path just to lay it in concrete. The council may have a very good reason for this unusual procedure, but on the face of it, it looks like valuable money thoughtlessly expended.—Yours etc., RATEPAYER. Hastings, 30/12/30.
