AUSSIE ODDS AND ENDS

Owners who have three-year-old fillies engaged in the Adrian Knox Stakes, to be run nt the A.J.C. Anniversary Meeting on 26th January, should note that the first forfeit of 1 sov. is due at 4 p.m. on Monday next, sth January. It may be paid to the secretary of tho Wellington Racing Club. * • » At the Rosebery (Sydney) meeting last week the first division of the principal event, run over a mile, was won by Comedy Queen, bv Comedy King from Fluency (Demosthenes— LoS Vegas), a mare that was bred at Mr. W. G. Stead's “Fiaxmere’ (H. 8. Stud and won several good races in Australia.

Among the first acceptors for the Tattersall’s Club Cup, 11 mile, to be run at Randwiek on New Year’s Day, there were three New Zealanders, Star God (Bst. 41b.), Dalston ("st. 101 b.) and Becalmed (6st. 71b.). Dalston, however, will not doubt have to put up a penalty on account of his win in the A.J.C. Summer Cup on Boxing Day.

The “Fiaxmere” bred AbsurdLady Ball gelding Horoscope, now in .ns eighth year, has earned a high place as a hurdler in the estimation of the V.A.T.C. handicapper. In the batten event at the Caulfield meeting on Boxing Day ho was set to carry 12st. 21b.. or just 2st. more than the next acceptor. We have vet to learn how he got- on under this load.

As was surmised from her name not appearing in the cabled account of the race tho locally bred mare Gay Ballerina was not a starter in the Villiers Stakes, the final acceptances list now to hand showing her to nave been Withdrawn. With 9st. .31b. to calry, she was among the first acceptors for the 6 furlongs Carrington Stakes run last Saturday. It cannot yet be said whether she was a starter, but again the cableman had nothing to say about her.

At a charity meeting held on the Goodwood course, West Australia, last Saturday week the first division of the Hodge Purse, 7 fuylongs, was won by Zealanda, a four-year-old mare by Leighton from Valvate, bred at “Fiaxmere,” H. 8., while another Maonlander in Miss Field was beaten by only a head in the second division of the same event.

On behalf of the Victoria Racing Club and the Victoria Amateur Turf Club it was recently announced that until further notice the price of admission for women to the grandstand enclosure at Flemington and Caulfield would be reduced by half. 'This is a tip that New Zealand clubs might follow during the “depression.”

It is pleasant to notice that the crack ) ictorian jockey W. Duncan, le of the broken neck,” is riding nr2in te 1118 “ I( ' fol 'in. At the Mentone b n l e) 4 eetln 8 last Saturday week he lode four out of tho six winners. A Meteor Rise, w-ur® five-year-old mare Pavilion, by William the Silent from the New Zea-land-bred mare Pavlova, has recent 1 proved .something of a female Phar laip. She has been unbeaten in any of her last four starts, her two latest victories being in the vuluable Villiers Stakes, one mile and Carrington Stakes, six furlongs In the latter event she was handicapped at 7st 101 b, the same weight as she carried in the mile race. H er win in that event incurred a 101 b penalty so that it was under Bst 51b she won last Saturday. In the Villiers Stakes she established a new Australasian mile record. 1.36, while her Carrington time, 1.101, was a record for Randwiek. In her first three successes of the series she was ridden by E. Bartie, but on Saturday the ex-New Zealand rider M. McCarten had the mount, Bartie being probably “claimed” for some other runner. Pavilion, weighted at 7st 81b, was among the first acceptances for the 12-furlong TattersaH's Cup on Thursday next, but will no doubt have incurred a penalty for that event also. It is worth noting that

prior to her recent run of wins over short courses, Pavilion was regarded as being at her best over middle distances.
