RAIL-AND-ROAD COACH

EXPERIMENT IN ENGLAND. The London Midland and Scottish Railway Company is going to “try out” the first combined rail-and-road motor-coach on a stretch of line and a stretch of road near London. The coach is similar in size and apppearance to the ordinary motor-coach, but is fitted with alternative sets of wheels, one with pneumatic tyres for use on the road and the other with steel tyres similar to those on a railway coach. It has machinery for raising and lowering the two sets of wheels. If the experiment is successful it will be possible to pick up passengers on the roads, take them to the railway station, and run the coach on to the railway line with its second set of wheels. Similarly, people will be able to travel from London to their homes in one and the same vehjcle. An official of the company said that the coach had been designed largely to compete with ordinary motorcoaches.
