FIRES
OUTBREAK IN HASTINGS. WASII-HOISE DESTROYED. An outbreak of fire at 5.10 this morning completely destroyed a wash-house abutting on the rear of a residence in Caroline road occupied by Mr J. Hutchinson. Mr Hutchinson was awakened by hearing a crackling noise at the rear of the house. On investigation he discovered that the wash-house was on fire, and the brigade was immediately notified. It was through its efforts that the fire was isolated to the wash-house, a complete absence of wind being of assistance. However, the bathroom, which is situated in the rear of the house, was badly scorched. The furniture is insured in the Union Insurance Office for £3OO. The insurance on the house is unascertainable. Fire was discovered to have broken out early yesterday morning in two old, unoccupied, adjoining cottages in Chaucer road. Napier. The outbreak started in the roof of one. spreading across to the roof of the other. The brigade was quickly on the scene nnd had the outbreak extinguished before the flames had cot control, only a little damage being done. The circumstances point strongly to incendiarism. An attempt was made to fire the building on November Sth.
