ELIMINATION MATCHES WANGANUI v. TARANAKI. THE LUCK OF THE GAME. [Per Press Association.] New Plymouth, Dec. 14. A remarkable change in the fortunes of the Hawke Cup match took place on Saturday, with the result that Taranaki has a chance of beating Wanganui. Fifty-four runs are required, and five wickets are in hand. W’anganui made 238 in the first innings and Taranaki replied with 131. The first test match between the West Indies and Australia was resumed in sultry conditions. When West Indies continued their strike they added only 10 runs, bringing their total to 296. Grant pjayed a cautions innings-, making 53 iit 188 minutes. The wicket was fast. Grimmett was the outstanding bowler. He and Hurwood alone troubled the batsmen. Australia opened poorly, Ponsford and Jackson being the opening batsmen. The first wicket fell for 56, and Bradman also went soon. With three down for 64, Kippax and McCabe stopped the rot, taking the score to 153 at the tea adjournment. This partnership produced 100 in 81 minutes. Then both men began hitting out. McCabe was missed off Martin at 57 and off Griffith at 74. He took his score to 90 when he was caught easily. He batted 132 minutes and hit nine fours.
