Miss J. Gowi* left Napier by car this morning for her home at Lower Hutt.

A Christchurch telegram reports fhe death of Mr Sydney Maxwell Richard son aged 29, secretary of the Canterbury Rugby League.

Professor T. E. Gregory has accepted tho chair of social economics at the Manchester University.

Mr Stanley Natusch, of the Wellington branch of the firm of Natusch and Sons is in Hastings for two or three days on business.

The Rev and Mrs E. Nicholls, of Hastings, left this morning to attend tho annual Baptist Conference, which takes place this year at Dunedin, from October 9 to 16.

Mr Sydney George has arrived in Hastings from Dunedin to visit his father, and Mr A. A. George, whose condition this morning was reported to be improving.

The death occurred in a private hospital in Wellington yesterday morning of Lieutenant-Colonel David Angus Gunn, field secretary of the Salvation Army in New Zealand.

During tho weekend spent in Waipukurau tho Hon. E. A. Ransom, acting Prime Minister, was a visitor to the Pukeora Sanatorium, being hospitably entertained by the matron and nursing staff at the conclusion of his round of the institution.

The death occurred suddenly on Thursday nt Wellington of Mrs B. Kemp, aged 64, a resident of Waipukurau for over 40 years. She was on a visit to Wellington. Her husband and grown-up family are left to mourn their loss.

Owing to her approaching marriage, Mies Ethel Cooke, of Napier, well known in musical circles, who has been in the employ of Harston’s Ltd., for a period exceeding five years, severed her connection with the firm on Saturday. Miss Cooke was met by members of the staff, and Mr Hurston, in making a presentation, made reference to Miss Cooke's service to the firm and her courtesy to customers.

• London paid its last tribute to Lord Birkenhead at Gray’s Inn Chapel, where a memorial service was held before tho body was taken to Golders Green for cremation. A distinguished company of lawyers and friends and Lady Birkenhead, her daughters and Son, stood besido tho coffin. A statement issued on t ehalf of the Countess says that sho is greatly touched by the number of ail classes, especially the poorer cnes, who have passed the bier. She is most anxious that they should attend the Abbey memorial service, for which there will bo no tickets.

Lord Stonehaven, late GovernorGeneral of Australia, who arrived by the Mnunganui to-day, from Sydney, will spend a fortnight in New Zealand en route to England. He will be the guest of Their Excellencies, Lord and Lady Bledisloe at Government House during his stay in Wellington, and within a few days will pay a visit to tho South Island, probably visiting Mount Cook. Returning to the North Island, he will pny a visit to Rotorua, and, will embank at Aucklai d on October 21 by tho Niagara for Vancouver.
