To-night 2ZL, Hastings, will broadcast a programme of gramophone and studio items from 7.30 o’clock.

The annual general meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association will bo held in the secretary’s office, Herschell street, Napier, on Thursday, October 9, at 2.3.0 p.m.

For its second bout the Hawke’s Bay Wrestling Association has matched Tom Alley and Walter Logan, two American matmen, for October 16, at the Municipal Theatre, Hastings. Last evening the Association decided to greatly reduce its prices fqr admission.

The Railways Commission, reporting on the Gisborne section, states: In view of the heavy losses incurred for services to the Public Works Department and Gisborne County Council, such losses should not be borne by the Railway Department, and, unless the bodies concerned are prepared to take over the line from the department, it should be closed. With respect to the Gisborne-Motuhora line, if the settler and others continue to support the road motor services in preference to the railway for transport, the position should be reviewed from time to time and consideration given to discontinue working this section. (Saving £2OOO per annum.)

The Clive Grange School will hold its plain and fancy dress ball tonight in the Haumoana Hall. A bus will leave Westerman’s Corner, Hastings, at 7.45.

Coates will speak at Maraekakaho at 8 p.m. The number of permanent signs (direction-posts and danger signals), erected by the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association, according to its annual report, throughout Hawko’s Bay total 239, not counting temporary detour and warning notices when various roads and bridges have been closed.

No visitors were present at the usual weekly luncheon of the Hastings Rotary Club to-day, with the exception of District Governor n. J. Guthrie, who was paying an official visit. Discussion was given to matters pertaining to Rotary.

Saturday, October 11, will be “Kindergarten Da-” m Hastings, and everyone is asked to help as much as possible—if not by giving, then by buying Flowers will be a special feature of this day, and tho flower stall will be iu charge of Mesdames R. Paynter Lovell-Smith and Comrie, who will be very glad to receive or call for donations of flowers or seedlings from those who have them to spare.

It is not everyone who receives money anonymously, but such was tho experience of a Timaru resident recently. One day an envelope arrived by post containing a pound note, but nothing to indicate by whom the money had been sent. The following week another pound arrived, and the. beneficiary, not being able to recall anyone to whom ho had loaned money, placed the matter in the hands of the police. During tho next two weeks another £2 arrived, but then the supply ceased, and so far no light has been thrown on the mystery.

The annual report of the Hawke’s Bay Automobile Association states that a new motorists’ camp has been established at Wairoa, and grants of £lO each had been made to tho Hastings, Dannovirko and Wairoa camps. Camp sites have now been provided at Beatson’s - Park, Hastings; George’s Drive, Napier; Coronation Park, Waiffewa; yaradalo Park, Taradalc; the Dominion, Dannovirko; site near bridge, Waipukurau; Wairoa, Wanstcad, Norscwood nnd Woodville.

A number of children from a wellknown school in Taraqaki correspond with pupils of the Ellerslie Hoad School, London, the headmaster of this school being Mr. G. G. Lewis, M.8.E., one of the most prominent headmasters in England to-day. In a recent letter Mr. Lewis writes: “Your children write very well—better than ours—though you must remember that one-third of our clever children are skimmed off for secondary schools, so that we have no firstrate material left. I believe we are branching off more in tho direction of training for life, whereas New Zealand is inclined to concentrate on tho ‘essentials.’ We probably cover more ground than you do. We are in an interesting, seething stage in Eng. land; we have more freedom; I’ve not had an exam, for 20 years! We have had several New Zealand teachers here for practice and observation, and I have a fair idea of what you do. New Zealand is not so mechanised as Australia.”
