SPRING RACING

H.B. J.C. MEETING SPRING HANDICAP TO MY OWN. HUNTING DAY THE SPRINT. Though the Hawke's Bay Jockey Club’s Spring Meeting, held at Hastings on Saturday, was not a great success from a financial point of view, from every other angle it was a decided success. The fields were of good size, the track was in splendid order, and the racing was of the best. It was expected that the totalisator figures would show a decrease, ns has happened with every other club for some time past. The total for the day was £10,545, as compared with £13,479 last year, a decrease of £2931.

The meeting was admirably managed, and credit must be given to the secretary, Mr H. 8. Mos, and his staff for their careful arrangements.

A musical programme and a description of the races broadcast by C. B. Hansen and Co., Ltd., was greatly appreciated by the spectators.

The public started off well in the Tomoana Hurdles, installing Cail Again a hot favourite, and the Callaghan—Dodo gelding, purchased that morning by Mr U. U. Swinnerds, of Hastings, from Air J. B. Gaistord, was always in a handy position, and oyer the last bit won comfortably. Kaokaoroa, the runner-up, showed a lot of pace, and with a little more jumping experience will have to be reckoned with in this class of race.

Sympathetic (£186), with H. Gray up, and Souchong (£128) were the public’s fancies in the Trial Stakes, and they tilled the places, though in the reverse order. Souchong hopped away smartly at the rise of the tapes and had several lengths’ lead coming round the bend for home. The son of Arausio—Suratura finished well, and easily held off Sympathetic and Pewa. who came fast over the last bit. The Royal Divorce—Footstep gelding was always up with the leaders, but faded out in the run home.

Fitz Quex (£469) was a hot order for the Glenaray Handicap, but the best he could do was third. Gray bopped Kahikatoa (£287) away smartly, and Mr H. Tupaea’s gelding ran out the distance in good style. Acmil was slow away, but put in a great burst at the finish. Desert Lad (£217) never looked a winner at any part of it. The Guineas was a good thing for Lady Pam, who was at a very short price. She went to the front early, and never looked like being beaten. Simba showed up early, but then dropped back, only to come again fast in the straight tb gain second money from Paratoo. Pakitere, Full Crop, and Sporting Chance ran fair races.

My Own wound up a better favourite than Don Quixote and Hynanna, and lying in second position behind Don Quixote till the straight was reached finished with something in hand. Valsier who was not much sought after, ran into second place, and paid a better price than the winner. The pace over the early part was slow. Gray, on Don Quixote, keeping back the field. Hynanna looked a possibility at the distance, but did not finish with his old dash. Mr W. R . Kemball sent out three to contest the Nursery, and two, in Cape Gold and Sailing ran first and second respectively. Being bracketed on the machine, only one dividend was paid out, and it was a fairly good one at that.

Huntingdon, with Gray aboard, was installed a good favourite for the Flaxmere Handicap, and getting away well was never headed. He is in great nick at present. Tahoma and Jenny Diver ran creditable races.

The punters were on the mark in the final event, the Flying Handicap, sending out Hunting Day, with Gray again in the saddle a warm favourite. Cuticle and Admiral Drake made all the running, but Hunting Day came fast over the last bith to snatch victory on the post. Royal Parade came from a good way back to get third money.
