NAPIER COURT
(Before Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M.) TO-DAY’S PROCEEDINGS.
For using motor lorries coming within the definition of heavy traffic without first paying the cost, as estimated by the Hawke’s Bay County Council, of remedying the damage to the conunty roads, in contravention to the counties’ joint by-laws, Alexander Fox, J Pittar, A. Conrad, G. Chase A. Booth, P. Peterson, P. Nuku, J. Wilson, W. Kirkham, and N. Raihania were each convicted and ordered to pay costs varying from 10s to 15s each. Mr H. B. Lusk, who appeared for the council, stated that since the cases were previously adjourned an arrangement had been made between the council and the defendants George Lennox Filmer, charged with being £l3 in arrears on a maintenance order, was convicted and sentenced to three months’ imprisonment, the warrant to be suspended provided the defendant pays 15s per week off the arrears, in addition to the current order. Charged with being £l6 10s in arrears or a maintenance order. Paul Augustus Martin was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, to be released on the payment of the full amount, together with £1 Is costs. Peter Chalmers appeared on a charge of using insulting language to Donomico Cincotta, the master of a trawler. Defendant admitted the offence but said that it followed a remark of Cincotta’s. which he considered insulting to returned soldiers. Chalmers was bound over to keep the peace for twelve months.
