GOLF

MAORI TOURNAMENT FIRST MEETING A GREAT SUCCESS. GOLD CUP TO SOUTHERN H.B. Last Tuesday and Wednesday the first Maori golf tournament was held at the Waiohiki links, and proved most successful, with players present from Gisborne, Wairoa, Napiei, Hastings, Paki Paki, Waipukurau, Porangahau, Takapaii and Dannevirke. The weather was favourable tor play, and some very good cards were handed in. The organisers of the tournament were the Rev. Rangi, Porangahau, Messrs. Turi Carroll, Wairoa, Bongo Halbert. Gisborne, and Kurupo Tareha, Waiohiki. The last-named is the “father of Maori golf,” and holder of a New Zealand amateur championship. The usual good sportsmanship was in evidence, and most of the games in the teams match for the Whatu Pailset Cup were played to the last hole. Before the presentation of the trophies by Mrs. Kurupo Tareha the vice-president, the Rev. Rangi, on behalf of the Maori Golf Association, thanked Mr Fryer and his executive for the privileges extended to his association, in connection with the holding of the tournament. Mr. Flyer, in reply, stressed the point that he and his executive were indeed pleased that the tournament had been held on the Waiohiki links, and only regretted that the short notice had precluded the possibility of helping further. He said that he was very pleased that nil had enjoyed themselves and made the tournament such a success, and was glad that the young members of the race were taking up golf for. in his opinion, after football golf is the game. (Interjections of “Golf first—football next!"). He thanked the vice-president for his remarks and expressed the hope that future tournaments would all be as successful as the first. The results of the various competitions were as follow:— Whatu Paikea Gold Cup (Competed for by teams representing the Southern H.B. and Northern H. 8., each consisting of 12 players).—Southern Hawke’s Bay. Medal Round, first day (Trophy ; Iron club; donor, Mr. Shaw).—Waimarama of Paki Paki, H. 8., nett score 73. Four-Ball Bogey (Smoker's set; donor, J. Hape, Dannevirke; case of silver spoons, donor, Mrs. Holden, Dannevirke).—Rev. Rangi of Porangahau and H. M. Tatere of Dannevirke, 5 up. Beginners’ Trophy (for players oj handicaps 16 to 20; trophy, pick of any club from Mr. Shaw’s shop; donor, Mr. Teddy Kuru. Porangnhau)J.
