Major E. 8. Harston, of the reserve of officers, Hawke’s Bay Regiment, has been awarded the'colonial auxiliary forces’ long-service medal.

New Plymouth exchanges announce the death there of Mrs Narie St. G. King, widow of the late Mr. Newton King, the well known stock and station agent of that town.

A London cable reports the death of Mr. Arthur g. Way, D. Litt, headmaster of Wesley college, Melbourne, from 1882 to 1892. He was the author or translater of numerous volumes of classical literature.

Cr. P. M. Cohr, who is visiting the Home Country was granted leave of absence for a further period of three months at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening. Cr. W. J. Lyon was also granted leave of absence for two months on account of business

The Now Zealand Board of Surveyors in conjunction with the Survey Boards of the Australian States, has announced that the following New Zealand candidates for registration have (inter alia) been successful in passing the examination:—J. E. Williamson (Napier), W. E. Lynch (Napier). On the recommendation of the Committee specially set up for the purpose, Dr. I. H. Henning, of the Sydney University, was appointed to the position of lecturer in modern languages by the Victoria College last evening. Eight applications had been received, but Dr. Henning’s selection was a unanimous one.

Prior to the commencement of business at the meeting of the Hastings Borough Council last evening, the Mayor( Mr. G. F. Roach) referred to the death of Mr. Charles Z. Brausch, whom he described as being a man always ready to lend his services to anything of a progressive nature in Hastings. Members of the council stood in silence as a mark of respect, and a letter of condolence is to be sent to relatives.
