THE MUNICIPALITY
HASTINGS COUNCIL MEETS ITEMS OF INTEREST TO RATEPAYERS. The Hastings Borough Council met last evening, the Mayor (Mr. 0. F. Roach) presiding over Crs. R. Henderson, P. Loach, C. H. Slater, G. W. B. McCormick, T. Donovan, R. Baker and J. Simmons. Advice was received that the next annual conference of delegates of the Municipal .Association would take place at Rotorua, commencing on March 4.—Received. The Municipal Association wrote stating that the executive had under consideration the question of the liability of local bodies to erect crossing signs where their streets cross the railway lines and stating that the executive considered it desirable that any local body called upon to erect such signs should not take any action without first referring the matter to the executive.—Received. The Municipal Association furtliei advised that it was making application for legislation validating grants made bv local authorities to the cancer campaign and to the Obsterical Society’s fund, and that the Minister of Internal Affairs hud agreed to the inclusion of the necessary validating clauses in the Finance Bill.—Received.
An application to operate a merrj-go-round nnd a cliuir-o-plane m Hastings prior to the Royal Show was made by Staig’s Amusement Enterprises, on the conditions that the company supply the two riding devices and the electric light, and the council arrange for the location and the license, the council to take 10 per cent, of the gross takings lUid to donate same to the Unemployment Fund, or any other charity,—lt was decided to reply to the company stating that the council was prepared to consider an application for a license, provided a suitable site could be procured, the license to be issued under the usual conditions. In the event of an application the Mayor and Or. C. H. Slater were authorised to attend to the arranging of the site.
The Hastings Fire Beard forwarded a circular from the Department ol Internal Affairs covering the form of a by-law to be made by the fire boards regulating the provision of fire escapes in buildings other than public buildings. The board was desirous of co-operating with the council in framing suitable by-laws regarding toe matter, and asked for an expression of opinion on the question from the council.—Referred to the building inspector for a report. The Hastings Citizens' Band wrote
'skmg that the recent recital at Cornwall Park in aid of the Unemployment Fund be deemed one of the band’s subsidy concerts.—Agreed to. The Park Tennis Club made application for eight courts at Cornwall Park, and enquired ns to tho possibility of thiee hard courts being laid in place of the three lower grass courts which, being in close proximity to a large number of trees, become very damp nnd do not get the use they should.—Referred to the Reserves Committee.
Regarding the question of heavy traffic fees, the Railway Department advised that this question was not >et settled, as the Department anticipated paying the fees as usual, but must first obtain the necessary authority before the Auditor-General will authorise payment.—Received. An offer to sell his land adjoining the Municipal Theatre was made to the council by Mr. A. F. Leipst— Referred to the Reserves and Finance Committee.
An application by L. Taylor for a water service to his premises near Gordon road, outside the borough, was granted on the usual terms. The Hastings Rugby Sub-Union was granted tho use of Nelson Park for a footballers’ athletic sports meeting on October 4. The Hastings Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club was granted use of Nelson Park for the coming season on the same terms as last -oar.
