SPRING RACING

HAWKE’S BAY JOCKEY CLUB

GOOD FIELDS FOR TO MORROW

ACCEPTANCES REVIEWED

From a racing point of view the spring meeting of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club to-morrow should be a very interesting one. The quantity, and in the majority of the races, the quality, is there, so that the racing should be very keen. With the exception of the hurdles, the fields show a decided increase on late years. Judging on recent race meetings an increase in the tote receipts can hardly be expected, but with fine weather the other receipts should come up to last season’s. The Hawke’s Bay Guineas has drawn the biggest field for some time, and there is going to be a very interesting race. The course is in excellent order, but by no means fast.

At 12.30 tho programme opens with the TOMOANA HURDLES, H mile. Call Again 10 9 Fiery Comet 9 0 Whakaue 913 Kaokaoroa 9 0 Tall Timber 9 3 Heartache 9 0 Call Again last season was most promising, and already this season hns won at Daniievirke from a lair field, and ns tho present opposition could hardly be classed “National,” the Callaghan gelding may be at rather a short price. Whakaue won nt the Hunt meeting here last month, and can be relied upon to run an honest race. Tall Timber, now that the tracks are not on tho Soft side. may not do ns well as recently. Fiery Comet, being a Day Comet, is a recommendation in itself. Kaokaoroa is a fine little fencer, but may not see the distance out. Heartache has not heen up a great time. The favourites on the machine may ho Call Again Fiery Come' Whakaue Then comes tho TRIAL STAKES. 5J furlongs; all 8.0. Tewn, Mon Roi, Tegau, Royal Bengal. Sympathetic, Black Acre, Royal Court, Shenanikidn, Lndv Makere, Brown Abbey, Aerospire, (Iran Chaco. Sum Up, Futurist, Ramuna. Veralux, Souchong. Tinowniutn. Town, from McKinnon’s Greenmeadows stables, is galloping well, and should made a bold hid. Tegau is an improved colt, and at Woodville has been showing sufficient track form to soon get out of this class. Mon Roi is backward. Royal Bengal is one that will do much better later. Sympathetic, with Hector Gray in the saddle, will not want for public support. Shenanikidia is improving with each gallop, and though on the small side is a hardy sort and must be considered. Lady Makere, Ramuna, Vera Lux, Tionwaiata. and Grnn Chaco are all in tho making. Acrospiro ran well enough at Dannevirke to win a -ace of this kind any time. At tho same meeting Souchong also ran prominently. Futurist is galloping well on the local tracks, but not being a good beginner is nt a disadvantage over a short course. The favourites may 1 be Sympathetic Tewa Aorospire Then follows tho GLENARAY HANDICAP. 1 mile 1 furlong. Sir Limond 8 9 Desert Lad 8 3 Fitz Quex 8 8 Annul 8 3 Kahikatoa 8 6 Whakaue 8 1 Repay 8 5 Whakaari 7 8 Little Barracoota 7 4 Wonder 8 3

Sir Limond last season as a two-year-old shaped well, but so far this racing year has not raced up to that form. Fitz Quex is a very fair hack. Kahikatoa is galloping great guns, and should his jockey be able to hold him in behind in the early stages lie should finish well. Repay is under cloud. Little Wonder won at Dannevirke, and ran exceptiontionally well at Wanganui. Desert Lad is due any day on his running in the Hack Cup nt Marton. Acmil is making her first appearance over a distance, and judging by her private efforts should run on all right. Wbakauo is more likely to contest the Hurdles. Whakaari, on track work, does not appeal, but that must bo totally ignored as he is a different horse altogether in a race. Barracouta makes up the field. Three that may appeal most are Desert Lad Kahikatoa Fitz Quex Next to interest is the HAWKE'S BAY GUINEAS. 1 mile. Full Crop 8 10 I’aratoo 8 10 Love Song 810 Grand Count 8 10 Merry Cry 8 10 Lady. Pam 8 5 Hunting Neu Lap 8 5 Don 8 10 Pakitere 8 fl Simba 8 10 .Rapallo 8 5 Sporting Ruby’s Step 8 o Chance 8 10 Tripping 8 5 Running Sea Fair ,8 5 Over 8 10 Full Crop the full brother to Singleton, is'said to be an improving sort; nevertheless, bis Gisborne form hardly warrants him winning a classic. Love Song, on two-year-old form, is a possibility. Merry Cry. although a mniden, is a very fair sort, and later on will be up tn the best company. Huntingdon is working well since coming here. Sporting Chance, with ten pounds overweight ran third at Wanganui, ami Hie Awapuni-trained Lackham colt may surprise. Simba gees fast, and bis gallop on Thursday afternoon,

when he run six furlongs in 1.13, makes him to be in good form. Good reports are to hand in connection with the Wanganui track work of I’aratoo, and he is sure to run out a solid mile. Lady Pam, on her race in the Eclipse Stakes, will greatly appeal to the public. Nne Lap cannot be recommended. Pnkitoro, the half-sister to Toxeuma, won nicely nt Marton, but failed a week later at Wanganui. Rapallo wns lair last season, but being a very gross filly may not be at her best just yet. Ruby’s Step does not appeal. Tripping, last season was n brilliant juvenile, so tho Nigger Minstrel filly may bo in tho pioiuro here. When the final bell rings most money may be found invested on Paratoo Simba pakitere Next on tho card is the • SPRING HANDICAP, 1J mile. Singleton 9 0 Queen’s Don Quixote 8 13 Choice 7 13 Hynanna 8 8 Valsier 7 5 M. Own 8 4 Zipper 7 2 Balloon 7 13 Te Awha 7 0 Tho best field that has contested this event for some time. Singleton is a far belter horse than many consider and despite Ins nine stone cannot be disregarded. Don Quixote won the G.N. St. Leger last season, and is now being prepared for the N. Cup. Years ago this race was considered as a very good guide for the N.Z. Cup. Hynanna. after the Manawatu meeting, was said to be on tlie eve of staging n comeback, but on his subsequent form at Dannevirke and Wanganui this apparently Ims been delayed. My Own is a very lit mare. Balloon, at the weight hardly, appears class enough. Queen's Choice, a consistent place-getter, also looks to he meeting company a little beyond him. Valsier is fair, but being a bad traveller may not be at his best. Zippor will not be oyerrushed. To Awha, a good light weight, may bo handy. The speculative public may confide in Don Quixote My Own Singletan Now for tho NURSERY HANDICAP, 5 furlongs. Curie 8 5 Gallant Fox 8 fl Movietone 8 5 Alimony 8 0 Brittany 8 5 Beppie 8 0 Innuendo 8 5 Diamond Fit 8 0 Benefice 8 5 Sailing 7 12 Leighcata 8 5 Cape Gold 7 12 This half-mile flutter is the centre of a deal of interest. Curio won. his parade at Marton to go on to Wanganui to run a very creditable fourth. Movietone, Sailing and Cape Gold all belong to Mr. W. R. Kemball, and judging on track reports are showing excellent work in private. Brittany and Benefice, although showing pace, are not quite as forward as the majority. Innuendo, by Tea Tray from that speedy mare Epitaph, has tho reputation of being able to catch swallows, so we will be able to see for ourselves to-morrow. Leighcata is not fulfilling earlier promise. Gallant Fox, in one or two gallops, was most impressive. Alimony and Beppie will do much better later. Diamond Pit has been showing good times at tho ’Meadows. Perhaps tho best backed will be: Curie Innuendo Kemball bracket Next for decision is tho FLAXMERE HANDICAP. 6 furlongs. Henry of Silver Tray 7 7 Navarro 8 8 Running Portray 8 7 Over 7 5 lairdlike 8 7 Rule Jenny Diver 8 fl Britannia 7 3 Tahoma 8 5 Channalino 7 3 Huntingdon 8 3 Laconic 7 3 Brown Sugar 8 3 Pvscho 7 2 Keen 7 10 Flute 7 2 Cloyno 7 8 Bramble Little Torn 7 2 Wonder 7 8 Vera Lux 7 2 This appears to be one of the most difficult of tho day's puzzles. Henry of Navarre has been responsible for attractive gallops at Greenineadows, and on that form will appeal strongly Portray is a good hack, and is in racing condition. Lordlike, on appearances, requires n race or two before being back to his winter form. Jenny Diver is working well. Tahoma does not appeal nt the weights. Hunting don. on Wanganui form, will bo sought after. Brown Sugar is another whoso track work is in the reckoning. Keen was never better is. his life, and with Larry Wiggins in the saddle will have a solid backing Cluync is not liked. Little Wonder is not likely to «ten out again after flic Glennr,nv IL'i’di’-an. Silver Tray, Running Over and Rule Brittania are a trio of smart gallopers. Charmaline is making her re-appearance, and looks like being in the want of a race.

Laconic is easily the best of the balance, and on Thursday morning executed a good gallop. In a big betting pool most money may be invested on Henry of Navarre Laconic. Keen The meeting concludes with the FLYING HANDICAP. 6 furlonfcs Hunting Maui 8 1 Day 9 0 Chopin 7 6 Head Mountain Serang 8 10 Heath 7 4 Royal Taranto 7 2 Parade 8 9 Cuticle 7 0 Admiral Huikai 7 0 Drake 8 4 Hunting Day is known as. a brilliant galloper, and despite this being his first race since the autumn, will bo greatly respected. Head Sorang and Royal Parade, on appearances, need a race. Admiral Drake has done some work and this will stand to him in a field that contains quite a few not really forward. Maui, on Dannevirke form, .must appeal. Chopin, with seven six, is nicely in. Mountain Heath and Huikai are better over n mile. Cuticle h galloping well, but has not been long up Taranto knows how to gallop, and being in racing trim is hard to pass over on that score. Three that may oeeiinv prominent positions in the betting market are Taranto Maui Admiral Drake

GERALDINE RACES BELFIELD TO DESERT SONG. Timaru, Sept. 25. The Geqjildine Racing Club’s meeting opened to-day in fine weather. The track was in good order, and the attendance was large, i The totalisator bandied £B7BB 10/-, compared with £10,275 for the first day last year. Just after the start of the last race, the Hunting Song filly Rosy Morn fell, breaking her shoulder, and was destroyed. W. Scobie, rider of Star Stranger If. in the opening event, was fined £2 for failing to ride his mount out. The late results were:— First Hurdles, 1 mile and 5 furlongs.—2 Mr H. A. The above later result is presumably correct. AUSSIE ODDS AND ENDS The Victoria-owned three-year-old Weathervane gelding Betwixt scored his second win when lie got home first in the Trial Handicap at the Albury meeting a fortnight buck. A Sydney paper states that two two-year-olds, one a colt by Roger de Busli from Mandalay, and the other a colt by Tippler (imp.) from Miss Myra (imp.), were shipped to New Zealand a fortnight back by J. T. Jamieson. So far as has been observed here no note of their arrival has been mentioned. » • • A New Zealander that came into sudden notice in the betting on the A.J.C. Epsom Handicap was Mel-bourne-owned Mystic Peak (Romeo— Refinement). Directly it wns made known that ho was to accompany the Metropolitan candidate Crngford to Sydney some clever people hopped in and secured a lot of long-priced money about the stable double However. their fingers were rather badly blistered when tho .pen was run through Mystic Peak’s name very shortly after his arrival in Sydney.

Mention wns made vesterdnv of Bennii'k. one of Tea Tray’s’ rets, having shown un well j n (h,. TWn-v»ar-old Trials at Randwick. On the same morning another of them in Lady Tray, from Dark Maiden, was first homo in one of the trial heats at Caulfield. As at Randwick, so at Caulfield the host time foi the four furlongs was 49! sees, and wns put up by a Heroic filly. From these

two results it would seem that the Valais wonder-horse is transmitting at least his speed to his progeny.

There are not ihany Dominion bred horses racing in Queensland, but there is quite a fair infusion of New Zealand blood among the breeding studs of the Banana State', a good deal of it introduced by the late Hon. J. D. Ormond when he held station property there. It is not. however, one of the “Karamu” lines, but one of Mr. \V. G. Stead’s breeding next door at “Flaxinere,” that is represented by Somniform (Boniform— Dreamer), who is the dam of Budgerigah (by Sereniond), winner of the Park Plate, Im. 57y., at the recent Brisbane Amateur Turf Club”s meeting.

Day Comet’s reputation as a begetter of jumpers was further enhanced when his son Constellation, from Tangiwni, won yet another hurdle race in VVestralia. This was at the Belmont Park (Perth) meeting a fortnight back, where another Maorilunder in Autobiography (Sutala— Egotism) added to a fairly lengthy list of successes by winning the Belmont Plate, 6 furlongs.

At one time the Hawkesbury (N.S.W.) meeting, which this year falls for holding to-indrrow, enlisted a good deal of attention as providing a lino to chancees at Randwick the following week. The prestige of the fixture in this respect has to a large extent been lost, owing to the number of tests that are now provided by earlier meetings round Sydney. Nothing more than the entry lists are as vet available here, rnd these show the now customary thick sprinkling of Maoriland blood. Main interest will probably attach to the Rowlev Mile and the Spring Handicap, Im. 3f., as perhaps disclosing fresh possibilities for the A.J.C. Epsom and Metropolitan Handicaps.
