If she succeeds it will be the longest flight ever accomplished by a woman. Mrs Bruce who is well known as a racing motorist and traveller, took to flying only six weeks ago. A LARGE SEAPLANE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 26, 12.30 p.m.) Rugby, Sept. 25. Highly successful demonstration flights have been given by the biggest seaplane so far constructed — namely, the Valeria monoplane, made by Short Bro., of Rochester. She is considered to mark a distinct advance on the Calcutta biplane type, also made by Shorts. The Valetta has a wing-span of 107 feet, three Bristol-Jupiter engines of 490 horse-power, a maximum speed of about 140 miles an hour, comfortable passenger accommedation'for 17, and is easily convertible to a land machine. With a 10-tons load the seaplane yesterday, in a side wind, took off in 18 seconds. NEW MAIL .SERVICE. (United Press Association—By CableCopyright.) (Received 26, 9.30 a.m.) London, Sept. 26. Amsterdam advice states that the first fortnightly mail ’plane left for Batavia to-day, piloted by Van Dyk. It carried 23,132 letters. A new Canadian air mail service by which European-bound mails will be flown approximately a third of their journey was successfully tested to-day when two seaplanes landed in the straits at Bell Isle from Quebec City. The 'planes transferred half a ton of mail to the Empress of Aus, tralia, saving 48 hours.
