OUTBREAKS OF FIRE
TWO IN HASTINGS LAST NIGHT. HOUSE TOTALLY DESTROYED. The Hastings Fire Brigade was called out twice last night, the first occasion being an outbreak of fire at 8.5 o’clock in a six-roomed, unoccupied house at the far end of Sylvan road, owned by Mr George Findlay, baker, of Hastings. The property was in a comparatively isolated position, and up till last Friday night had been tenanted by Mr H. R. Murray and family. Two alarms were given, one from Heretaunga street, and the other from Willow Park road, but the fire had obtained too strong a hold, and despite the efforts of the brigade, the building was burnt to the ground. A large crowd of people gathered about the place, and it was estimated that there were at least 300 cars parked in the neighbourhood of the fire. The house was insured for £7OO in the Victoria Office. TWO ROOMS DAMAGED. The second outbreak occurred at 2 o’clock this morning in a house owned and occupied by Mr J. S. Wright, of Riverslea road south. The flames had obtained a strong hold before the arrival of the brigade, and two rooms were gutted before the flames were subdued. The furniture was insured for £2OO in the Sun office. The brigade desires to thank Mr Grigg for the light refreshments provided.
