WAIPUKURAU

(Special Representative.) Verv cold weather continues in Central Hawke's Bay. The Ruahiiu range is liberally coated with snow and in the Hatuma district the highest hills have been lightly mantled. Under the auspices of the local branch of the W.E.A. the second lecture of the ‘‘East and West” series took place last night, there being a fairly large attendance. Mr. J. A. Brailsford, 8.A., the tutorlecturer, dealt interestingly with ‘‘Family Life in Asia,” drawing upon His observations during seven years’ residence in China and Japan. Lantern slides served to illustrate various notqble features of an address calculated to prove of much educational value. The rainfall for July totalled 3.42 inches. 17 days contributing to the record. Mrs C. Kino and her daughter, Mrs F. Lewis, of Hokitika, are visitors to Waipukurao. Mrs Kaye-Thomson, lately of Onga Onga, where she was a member of the school teaching staff, left Waipukurau yesterday for Westport. Ou the eve of her departure from Onga Onga Mrs Kaye-Thomson was the recipient of a presentation, in the form of a travelling rug from the parents and an umbrella the scholars. At the meeting of the management committee of the Central Hawke's Bay Rugby Sub-Union a resolution of sympathy with Mr T. Dunn, a member of the committee, on the death of his father an old resident of- Waipawa, was passed. Mr. John W. King, of Christchurch is visiting Waipukurau. Mr H. G Watson, a former local resident and now of Auckland, is reported to be seriously ill in the Auckland public hospital. At a verv successful camp-fire social held bv members of St. Andrew’s (Presbyterian) Girls’ Guild on Wednesday night Mr. M. Sowry, who has been prominently associated with St. Andrew’s Sunday School for 19 years, was farewelled. Mr. E. A. J. Elliott following upon a warm tribute, made the oresentation of a set of books to the guest of honour. The Rec. A C. McLean, M.A., also referred in eulogistic terms to the work of Mr. Sowry. joining in expressing regret at his departure. The local branch of the Home and School League held a very enjoyable social evening in the Waipukurau District High School nrimary building last night. RUGBY FOOTBALL. The Central H.B. Sub-Union has decided not to pav a representative visit to Wairoa this season. An effort will be made to arrange a match for an early date next season. The Sub-Union desires to arrange a match between the Te Aute College and M.A.C. senior teams for the latter part of the present season Instead of being played in Central Hawke’s Bay as nt first intended the New Plymouth High School-Te Aute College annual fixture will take place in New Plymouth The Te Aute College senior team has forfeited to-day’s fixture, set down for decision at Takapau, against the local seniors.
