WHAKATUS v. RANGERS 0 GAME AT CORNWALL PARK. Whakatu defeated Napier Rangers at Cornwall Park, Hastings, this afternoon by t goals to nil. Rangers only fielded eight men, and therefore Whakatu had things almost their own way. and were never fully extended. In the first half D. Penman and H. Penman scored for Whakatu, these being the only scores at halftime.
In the second half the Black and Whites increased their lead, D. Offen, L. Tayler and and H. Penman each scoring one goal. Rangers . were without Tasker in goal, but his substitute, Scott, played a good game, and would have shown up much bettor on firm ground. Rangers were unable to get past the Whakatu defence, and failed to open their account, the final score being: Whakatu 5 Rangers 0 Mr. W. Parnell refereed. TOUR WANTED FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION APPEAL TO ENGLAND The following article appears in tne London “Athletic News’’ of 16th. June:— With a view to strengthening the Association game in the Empire the Football Association has been asked to consider tho possibility of organising a scheme whereby an English team of young players would tour New Zealand, Australia, Canada and (South Africa in successive seasons, the funds raised to be used to further the game, particularly in the schools. This proposal is now made by the New Zealand Football Association, tho recent request of which for a Football Association team to visit them this summer proved unsuccessful.
New Zealand now renew their appeal end also make this suggestion that there shall be a regular piogramme of Empire tours, Mr. Frank Campbell .chairman of the New Zealand Football Association, points out that New Zealand has now 543 teams, and about 7,000 players. Finance, however, has always been a big problem, and New Zealand invites tho Football Association to meet their needs by sending out a team mainly composed of young Second and Third Division players; paying the cost of the assembly of the team and tho boat fares (approximately £135 a player), together with those of managers and trainer: (he clubs to release players and pay their wages; the New Zealand Football Association would take over the party on their arrival and pay all travelling and hotel expenses in that counhyi tho team to leave England early in April nnd return about tho middle of October. Tho New eZalnnd Football Association is disappointed that the Football Association was unable to send a team this year, and asks tho “Athletic Nows” to make known the details of its desires so that Second and Third Division clubs, which have never had a tour to themselves, may consider tho matter. The first move in the project must come, of course, from tho Football Association ,and there are obvious difficulties. Tho cost is considerable, olthough the Football Association might bo prepared to shoulder it in the general interests of tho game, while the duration of the trip, as at present suggested, is impossible; clubs would not release players for two months of tho English football season. as New Zealand has never had a visit from a Football, Association team, however, every effort ought to be made to send one. Y.M.C.aTvT UNITED. United won tho toss, and Y.M.C.A. kicking off immediately made ground, the ball going out of play. Brehaut, receiving a long through pass, got well down, but his centre was cleared. Durie got the first good shot in, the ball going outside the post. Y.M. were having rather the better of the exchanges at this period, United being rather ragged. Butcher sent Simmonds away, and the Y.M. goal had a narrow escape from tho cen. ( tie. The game became fast, both, sides attacking in turn, Stenson kicking away an almost certain goal from the goal mouth, and Thompson clearing from Bolesworth at the opposite end. Simmonds made a sensational run down tho wing and finished up with a great shot, which was just cleared. Y.M. raided the United goal area in turn, but again play went to the other end. First blood came to United. Butcher working a fine opening, Clark struck the post, Bolesworth scoriijg from the rebound.— United 1, Y.M.C.A. 0. Y.M. attacked, strongly, the visitors’ defence having an anxious time clearing their lines. United returned the compliment, Simmonds making nrwther fine run. Thefgame was very fast, both teams playing a hard and determined game. Half-time sounded with the scores unaltered. On resuming United immediately got down. Vanaara shooting high Y.M. got down from the goal kick, but the ball went out of play. Offside nullified the next United advance. Atkins next cleared, and Glass sending a neat pass out to Simmonds .from whose centre Clark put United another goal up.—United 2, Y.M.C.A. 0. *
Play hung around midfield for some time, when Y.M. got clear and Young reduced the margin with a neat left foot drive.—United 2. Y.M. 1.
United took up the running again, showing plenty of dash. The equalising goal came from Durie, tho ball slipping out of Atkins’ hands.— United 2, Y.M.C.A. 2.
Y.M. were playing the better game now, but United were still going strong and the game veered from one end of the field to the other. Following a corner kick to United the ball was kicked well up the field. Durie getting right through skied the ball. The game fluctuated, United again
having the better of the exchanges. After a lucky clearance from a corner kick United raced away, but Y.M. returned and from a tussle in front of’the goal Thomson put Y.M. ahead. —United 2, Y.M. 3. United gained ground again,, but from a long kick Cardie miss-kicked and Young had no difficulty in notching Y.M.’s fourth goal, and the final whistle sounded with the scores reading:—: Y.M 4 United 2 Mr. Knight was referee. though they were having a better of
