HASTINGS CENTRAL

ANNUAL SCHOOL BALL GREAT SUCCESS IN EVERY WAY CHILDREN HAVE JOYOUS EVENING. The night- of nights for tho pupils of the Hustings Central School was last evening, when the annual plain and fancy dress ball was held, lhe Assembly Hall was crowded with a great throng of happy, laugniim children. It was a wonderful sight to watch the 600 or so youncsteis romping joyously over the floor in their multi-coloured fancy dresses. It was clear that for weeks past tho annual ball had been anticipated by both children and parents, the latter no doubt, spending many hours in fashioning the frocks for the youngsters. Certainly the results justified their efforts, for seldom has such a wonderful array of dresses been seen in Hastings. . The task of tho judges, Mrs. A. Symes and Miss ,C. Symes, was one that presented many problems; there were so many beautiful dresses, so many original ones, and so many that deserved the all too few prizes that were to bo awarded. However, tlie ladies accomplished their arduous task in a highly satisfactory manner, and their awards met with general approval. The grand march was an impressive sight, the boys being led by A. Dudfield, T. Church, B. Wright and R. Simmonds, while Mary Raqgi, Muriel Shaw, Betty Bark and Rona Tong wore at the head of the £ l rls. The orderly marching round the hall afforded the judges an excellent opportunity to make then- decisions which were as follow:— Best dress Senior hoys: Ted Church (John Bull) 1, Dalby Lean (Shiek) 2: senior girls, Muriel Shaw (Russian Dancer) 1, Nancy Scott (Early Victorian) 2; junior boys, Irvine McMillan (Fisherman) 1. Jack Broomhead (Clown) 2; junior girls, Joy Forster (Early Victorian) 1. Valmai John (Bo Peep) 2. , Best advertisement.— Boys: Keith Gill (Bell's Grocery); girls, Mavis Corby (Twink). Original costumes.—Boys: Lindsay Basiiford (Clock); girls, Joy Joll (Robin Redbreast). Specials. — Boys, Henry Dysart (Shell Benzine), Vincent Hansen (Triumph Motor Cycle), E. I/raper (Jew); girls. P. Loonies (Hawaiian), Elaine and Valma Ross (Posies), and Elsie Littlejohn (Posy). Everv pwiise is due to the wonderful organisation of the function. Apart from the 600 children there were over 300 adults present, and to enter for such a big gathering was a great undertaking. The ladies’ committee, under Mrs. C. P. Hopkins, worked unceasingly and proyided the children with all they required. A feature of the evening was the folk dancing, taught the pupils by tho teaching staff. Every movement was accomplished with precision and everyone enjoyed the dances especially the youngsters, who clamoured for extras. The orchestra, under the leadership of Mr. H. Cooper, ably supnlied the music. Messrs. J. A. Bink and W. C. Clifford were M.’sC. LIST OF FANCY DRESSES. The following were the dresses:—
