NEWS AND NOTES, (Special Representative.) Air. AV. Collins, of Takapau road, who entered the Waipukurau Public Hospital a week back and underwent an operation on Wednesday, is now progressing favourably. Mr. J. W Elliott, clerk to the Pataugata County Council, is in Wellington attending tho annual conference of local body clerks. In addition to the area of 1,200 acres offered to the Government by Air. J. McLennan "Rylands” for closer settlement an additional 600 acres owned by Air. Al. Tansey, “Newlands,” in the same block of county, is under offer. Some 10 holdings could be provided, and the land being very suitable for tho purpose, also within four miles of Waipukurau, it is hoped that a purchase will result. In telegrams to the Prime Afinister and the Minister of Lands forwarded on Saturday, the president of the Chamber of Commerce has directed special attention to the oilers. On the subject of providing a midday train service for Waipukurau and Central Hawke’s Bay generally on the occasion of the BritishHawke’s Bay Rugby match, tho president of the Chamber of Commerce has drawn the attention of the General Alanager of the N.Z. Railways to the fact that not only would the AVaipukurau special half-holiday needs be catered for. but the usual requirements of such residents of Waipawa as observe a Saturday halfholiday and Otane, with the statutory closing of shops that day. Such a train would also be of some service to the Pukehou district. In the existing proposed train arrangements ths usual 7.30 a.m. train is to bo delayed till 8.45 a.m., a through special available at 10 a.m., and tho fast goods at 11 a.m. Ample midmorning accommodation, but none thereafter.
