Hon. J. H. Scullin, until he (Mr. Scullin) arrives in London at the end of September to confer with the Dominion Office. It is understood that Lord Stonehaven has made arrangements to leave Australia on October 2. To fill the gap of about six months between the departure of Lord Stonehaven and the arrival of the new GovernorGeneral it is stated flat the Governor of Victoria, Lord Somers, will most probably be sworn in as Governor-General. The expenditure by Australia’s various governing bodies during the last financial year was more than half the value of all production during that period. The Federal Government spent £81,000,000, the six State Governments £121,000,000 and 1,058 local governing bodies spent £36,500,000. The total value of Australian production for the same period was £455,000,000. During 1928-29 the taxation by the combined Australian Governments amounted to £88,750,000, compared with £45,000,000 ten years ago. Five hundred miners employed at the Coalcliff colliery, on the south coast, decided to adopt instructions from the Federal Council of the Miners’ Federation to strike. The basic wage for men workers has been reduced by a shilling to £4 6/-. The rate for country districts has been established at £4 5/-. Adult females in the metropolitan area receive £2 6 5 and in the country £2 5/11 a week.
