HARBOUR BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING HELD. MINOR MATTERS DEALT WITH. The monthly meeting of the Napier Harbour Board was held in Napier yesterday. Present; Messrs A. E. Jull (chairman), J. H. Joll, N. P. Eriksen, J. E. Jones, B. B. Creagh, P. K. Higgins, P. W. Peters, G. McKay and H. Anderson. Leave of absence was granted Messrs J. J. Langridge, \V. J. Lyon, J. C. Bryant, E. A. Goodger, and G. C. Lowe. The Bank of New Zealand advised that the interest rate on the board’s overdraft had been increased from 6J to 7 per cent. Dalgety and Co., Ltd., wrote in connection with the proposal to pave in bitumen the West Quay, stating that it was noted that question had been referred to the Napier Borough Council, the owners of the road. 'lhe company stated that they had in the first place approached the council but were informed that the control of the road was entirely in the board's hands.—lt was stated that the council was having a report made on the matter, SUBDIVISION OF 28-ACRE BLOCK. Tn connection with the subdivision of the 28-acre block and the question of Morse’s cottages in George’s Drive the Napier Borough Council stated that their special committee had conferred with Mr. Morse and his solicitor regarding the compensation to be paid for removal of the two buildings and the amounts asked are L‘l4GO for the large cottage and £B6O for the small one. Mr. Morse stated that, the two buildings .might be sold for £275 for removal. The special committee had also conferred with representatives of the syndicate regarding the claim, if any, for compensation for the sections on which the two buildings stood but had not vet been able to obtain definite information. The representatives of the syndicate stated they might he in a position to make a definite decision—during the present week.— Mr. Jull pointed out that the whole of the subdivision of the 28-acre block was held up by the cottages. Once a decision was made the board could got on with its work. It was decided to ask the Napier Borough Council to expedite the matter. ENGINEERS’ REPORT. The engineers (Messrs. -Holmes and Son) in their report on the progress of works stated:— Cattle Wharf.—Eighteen face piles, three back stay piles and six staging piles have been driven during the period. The pile heads along 27ft. of face work have been broken down to allow the cap to be concreted and the necessary forms, etc., made. The “J.D.0.” has been continuously at work removing the material in consequence of rounding off the corner of the Cattle Wharf. Foreshore protection :—Twelve 10-ton blocks have been made to date for the protection near “E” shed. The timber breastwork along Hardinge road was breached in several places and repairs have been effected.

Mr. G. Rochfort reported that the cutting down of the levee on the Richmond block was in hand. The bank of the river had been lowered in two places opposite the High School and good progress was being, made lowering the levee near Maraenui.
