MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES

OBJECTION TO ABANDONMENT OF INQUIRY.

Wellington, March 9.

Mr F. Campbell, president of the Now Zealand Mauufacturera’ Federation, baa issued the following stalemeat in connection with the possible abandonment of tho inquiry into the manufacturing industries, because, owing to the absence of the Hon. J. G. C-jbbc and the resignation of Mr H. 1,. Jenkins, M.P., from the committee, the Government will have no representation. “The announcement by the Hou. J. B. Donald, Minister of industries and Commerce, that tho proposed inquiry into the manufactuiing industries by the Parliamentary committee set up during last session will not be held comes as a great surprise and disappointment to those interested in manufacturing industries. It seems as though through unforeseen circumstances another year has been wasted and no progress made “It is almost imperative that somo inquiry should be made at once, aim to obviate delay it is suggested that the Minister might, under the power contained in the Board of Trade Act, set up a committee or*Business men who could efficiently conduct such an inquiry and make their findings to the Government of the day. A committee of three would be enough. The personnel could be arranged by the Minister, and I am sure it would be acceptable to all concerned. What tho manufacturers want is an inquiry by competent persons no matter whether in or out of Parliament. I feel sure that it is only by a complete and economic survey of the industries, can their real value to the Dominion be ascertained."
