FUTURE OF UNITED EMPIRE PARTY

A PIQUANT SITUATION. DONATIONS BEING RETURNED. (United Preus Association—By Cable— Copyright.! London, March 7. The trustees of the United Empire party announce that in view of the changed situation all donations are being returned, accompanied with personal thanks from Lord Beaverbrook. The fund totalled £94,000. Statements issued by Lord Rothermere and Lord Beaverbrook reveal a piquant situation relating to the future of the party.

Lord Rothermere announces that the party has achieved only one of its objectives with the official Conservative adoption of Empire f>e trade. There rqmain three other aims of even greater importance—namely, a high tariff against imported manufactured goods, ruthless economy, and no more surrenders to India. Towards these objectives and the severance of diplomatic relations with Russia the party will continue to press.

Lord Beaverbrook, commenting on Lord Rothermere’s statement, points out thaf. it involves a. complete departure from the party's original aim, Empire free trade, which was the sole issue mentioned in the original manifesto. He said: “I was aware that Lord Rothermere wished to enlarge the programme to embrace other noltical issues. I did not agree therewith.”
