Soccer Cup Came: In an Association Cup re-play Hull beat Newcastle by one goal to nil.
Shark in Bathing Enclosure: Fifty people bathing in the Rocks Baths at Hawkesbury (N.S.W.) received a fright when a large shark made its appearance in the enclosure. A hurried exit was made by the bathers and the shark was caught with a line. It is believed that the monster was washed in at high tide, when waves break over the wall.
Thrilling Police Chase: Seven shots were fired by the police during a thrilling chase after a thief following the robbing of a safe at Tattersail’s Hotel, Sydney, of £l,OOO. The man led the chase over the roofs of several buildings and was finally captured after a desperate struggle. A second man was arrested in a room at the hotel.
Secession Advocated—Speaking at an election meeting in Perth the Hon. W. Richardson, M.L.A., said he would advocate the secession of Western Australia from the Commonwealtu.
Taxation in Australia.—Following a caucus meeting at Canberra it was stated that there was no likelihood of further increases in direct taxation. Nevertheless, important amendments to the general taxation law are foreshadowed. Further tariff duties are also contemplated. Another taxation proposal that the Government confirmed was an additional petrol tax of two ponce half penny per gallon.
