LATE CABLES IN BRIEF.
Business Men’s Conference. In the House of Commons Mr Gilletf in answer to a question, said that the British organisation Concerned ir industry, commerce and shipping was communicating with similar organisations in the Dominions with a view to holding an Imperial business men’s conference simultaneously with the Imperial Conference.
Trade Rep. In Canada.—The Federal Minister of Markets, Mr Maloney, announced the resignation of Mr Haynes as Australia’s trade representative in Canada, adding that the Government had offered the post tp Mr L. R. MacGregor, Director of Marketing in Queensland, So far, Mr MacGregor had not accepted.
Heavy Rains.—Over 150 miles of railway between Port Augusta and Kalgoorlie is affected by washways which have caused dislocation of ihe trans-Australian railways for ten days. Suspension of the service is likely. Near Forrest is a lake a mile long and in places the water is a foot over the lines.
Sensational Escape.—Smashing the window of a railway carriage and leaping to the rails, John King, a prisoner who was being escorted to Tamworth (N.S.W.) gaol, made a spectacu lar escape from his guard when the train -was travelling at about 40 miles an hour near Ham-worth. The escorting constable, ip attempting to stop King, burst through a glass partition door, severely cutting his arm.
Reprieved Murderers.—“l am in touch with many reprieved murderers, and they are splendid fellows. Some are married and have happy famil ies,” said the Rev W. Cottrell, chaplain at Wormwood Scrubs Prison, giving evidence before the select committee on capital punishment. The Rev. Cottrell has -witnessed 15 executions and favours retention of the death sentence.
Tote in England: The Automatic Telephone Company’s Manufacturing Company’s electric totalistaor has been officially adopted for British courses. Models will shortly be exhibited in Australia and New Zealand.
