HASTINGS MAGISTRATE’S COURT

(Before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, YESTERDAY’S CASES. To a charge of dangerous driving at the St. Aubyn sweet crossing William Tucker (Mr. Scannell) pleaded not guilty. The county inspector, Mr. Yates, stated that he was standing at the intersection of the St. Aubyn street crossing at the time of. the offence and estimated defendant’s speed at 33 miles per hour. William Tucker, wool scourer, gave evidence that he was not driving more than 20 miles per hour when Mr. Duunett called out In answer to Inspector Duunett. defendant admitted that he had been warned previously by the inspector. Defendant was fined £1 ! and costs 17/-. ABOUT A DOG. Henry Wall (Mr. W. McLean) was charged with failing to register a dog and pleaded not guilty. Kenneth Campbell (Mr. E. L. Commin), tax collector, stated that when he asked defendant if he had a stray dog there he ordered him off the place. Only two dogs out of three on Wall’s place were registered and witness identified the third. He then sent defendant a registered letter telling him to como to his house and register the dog. For the defence Mi. McLean state that for eight weeks defendant had had the dog there and had been unable to get rid of it. He had not fed it and had even thrown stones at it to drive it away. On this evidence, counsel submitted that he did not keep the clog. The defendant, in evidence, said that the tax collector had been objectionable in his manner and would not state his business. The dog had disappeared before he had received the registered letter from Campbell. To Mr. Conunin, defendant said he had had to tie the dog up because it was such a “dashed nuisance” when he was getting in the cows. Defendant was convicted and ordered to pay 15/6 costs.
