UNEMPLOYMENT
ACUTE POSITION IN DUNEDIN. BATTALIONS OF IDLE MEN. Dunedin, Feb. 5. IS, solution has yet been found for the unemployment difficulty in Dunedin. Battalions of enforcedly idle men apply in vain at the Trades Hall and more would register there if they thought there was any hope of work. This week Mr. Harrison (secretary of the General Labourers’ Union) and Mr. J. Robinson (secretary of the district council of the Alliance of Labour) conferred with the Hon. M . 11. Taverner, and that Minister promised to do his bestxto see if work could be found. One job that lias raised expectations is the building of the Poolburn dam, where preliminary operations have been begun, but no call has yet been made for a labouring gang. The housing scheme in North-East Valley is also looked to but it is understood that some matters in connection therewith have had to he referred to Wellington and Mr. .1. W. .Munro, M I’.. is interesting himself in trying to get this put through without
