With 40,122 public employees waiting unpaid salaries, the City Council capitulated to an ultimatum from Strawn’s citizens’ rescue committee. backed by about 50,000,000 dollars, who will advance the money needed through the purchase of tax anticipation warrants. Mayor Thompson continues to regard Strawn’s committeemen as “fake reformers” and refuses to cooperate with other officials, who see no other way to obtain the money. Strawn’s offer is on condition that the city officials use the money eceononiically anil in a manner acceptable to the citizens’ committee. Meantime, to-day the citv experienced two gang murders, making seven in a week. Bandits continued to ply their trade daringly. One of the most spectacular raids occurred when gunmen took possession of a mansion in Kenilworth a suburb shut the owner, with his wife and servants in a small cellar room and ransacked the house from end, to end gaining enormous loot, which included jewellery, plate, monev and clothing. They escaped in a motor-car.
