DROWNING TRAGEDY BEACH INSPECTOR’S HEROISM. RIOTOUS SCENES IN N.S.W. ASSEMBLY. (United Freer Association— By Cable-. Copyright.) (Received 5, 10.10 a.m.) Sydney, Dec. 5. Two schoolgirls, Thelma Riley, aged 15, and Elvy Hamilton, aged nine, were drowned in the surf at Thirroul on the south coast. Two others in the same party were rescued at the point of exhaustion. The tragedy was relieved only by the heroism of the - beach inspector, Jack Rankin, who, after rescuing two girls, searched for the others, lie had to be dragged forcibly from the water and needed medical attention. Riotous scenes continue in the Legislative Assembly. Pandemonium reigned last night when Mr. J. T. Lang, Leader ot the Opposition, refused to apologise for a remark to Mr. Thorby, Minister of Agriculture, and was forced to leave the Chamber. The police yesterday arrested Janes Devino on a charge of shooting Bernard Dalton. Devino was recently acquitted of the murder of a gunman, Gaffney, who was shot during a gang raid at Dcvino’s home at Maroubra. N.S.W. BASIC WAGE. (United Press Association—By Cable— Copyright... (Received 5, 12.10 p.m.) Sydney, Dec. 5. The State Government's basic wage decision was announced by the Premier in the Assembly. Mr. Bavin said it was proposed to adopt a standard of an average family of a man and wife and one child. He anticipated that the basic wage would be fixed at £4 3/6 with an allowance of five shillings for each child after the first.
