WESTSHORE EROSION

HARBOUR BOARD HELD LIABLE. PROTECTIVE WORKS TO BE ASKED FOR. The erosion at Westshore is a matter that has frequently been discussed by local bodies with a view to fixing the responsibility for carrying out works to prevent the sea making further inroads into the beach. According to a letter received by the Hawke's Bay County Council yesterday from Mr. W. E. Barnard. M.P., the Marine Department holds that the Napier Harbour Board should remedy or assist in remedying the erosion. As no Crown land was involved the question was not one for action on the part of the department. Mr. C. C. Smith stated that the erosion was a menace to property at Westshore and to the council's road. Unless something was done in the near future Charles street would be wiped out and the sea would force its way into the Inner Harbour. Mr. F. B. Logan said that it was the opinion of some that the destruction of portion of the protecting mole was responsible for the sea causing the erosion. The council decided to approach the Harbour Board with a request to carry out protective works.
