BYRD EXPEDITION

SUN’S WELCOME RETURN. WARMER WEATHER APPROACHING. 'By Rusiell Owen, copyright, 1028, by the "New York Times" Company and the "St Lonii Post Dispatch.” All right* tor publication reserved throughout rhe world. Wireless to the "New York Times.") (Received 6, 9.55 a.m.) Bay of Whales, September 4. “Although the sun is getting higher above the horizon every day, that does not mean that the weather is warmer. As a matter of fact. 60 degrees below is not uncommon with us. “To-day was calm and clear, with hardly a cloud in the sky. The sun was shining brilliantly several degrees above the horizon, but it was 48 below zero and very unpleasant when facing the almost imperceptible breeze.

“Work is proceeding indoors all the time, however. The aeroplane crews are getting material ready to overhaul the ’planes just as early as possible. “We are thankful for tlie sun, even though at present it has brought colder weather. In a few more weeks the thermometer will begin to go up in earnest.”
