Archdeacon Williams, the Commissary appointed by the Archbishop, has summoned a special meeting of the Synod for October 10 for the purpose of electing a successor to Dr. Sedgwick as Bishop of Waiapu. The flow of water in the Ta"'” Flat tunnel, which interfered with construction work last week, was got in hand by Sunday, and since then the pumps have been able to keep pace with the flow, which is now small.— (Press Association.) For stock and goodwill the Government paid to private ’bus owners the sum of £70,947. according to a return tabled in the'House of Representatives yesterday. Some 58 ’buses were so purchased, 49 of them being now in use by the Railway Department. The H.B. General Labourers will hold their monthly meeting in the Trades Hall, Karamu road, Hastings, to-morrow night, at 7.45 o'clock. All members are requested to attend as there is important business to transact A cottage, owned by E. R. Renner, of Repongaere (Gisborne), and occupied by C. Earle, sharemilker, was destroyed by fire. Earle was absent and his wife bad some difficulty in rescuing her six small children,— Press Association.
Though Gisborne is without a permanent airfield, arrangements have been made with the Hawke’s Bay Aero Club to give flying instruction to the local enthusiasts and tho first flights were made to-day from the Makaraka racecourse, Captain White, of Hastings, being in the instructor’s seat. Ten aspirants for flying licenses took the preliminary course of instruction to-day,—Press Association.
The Budget proposal to give farmers with properties of an unimproved value of £12,500 and over, tho option of paying either land or income tax was described by a Rangitikei farmer as a “double-headed penny,’’ said Mr W. H. Field (Otaki) in the House of Representatives. “I think it is quite an ordinary penny,” said Mr Field. “But whichever way it comes down the Tax Department wins. It is a ease of ‘Heads I win, tails you lose.’ ”
Inquiry as to whether the Government intends to extend for a further five years tho term of office of the present Director-General of Agriculture was made by Mr W. L. Martin (Labour member for Raglan) in a question given notice of in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr Martin asked also if an extension were proposed that the Minister of Agriculture, before taking action, seriously consider the request of farm ers’ organisations and others, and appoint a competent bacteriologist and pathologist as head of the Department.
Napier was visited in large numbers yesterday by Hastings and country residents, Shopping Week proving a big attraction. During the day competitions were held for the youngsters, with the following results :—Singing, girls under 12 years, Francis Reed and Patty Mullaney I, Betty Davis and Dorothy Anderson 2; boys over 12 years, Gilbert Knowles 1, Frank McKnight 2; mouth organ solo, R. Longney 1, A. Clark 2.

By a five to one majority tho ratepayers of the South Taranaki Power Board area yesterday sanctioned a loan of £187,500 to enable the board to purchase and develop the HaA-era Electric Lighting Company's undertaking at a price of £125,687. This price was fixed by arbitration after a seventeen days’ hearing last March and aroused the Dominion wide interest of accountants, engineers and the legal profession Mr (now Mr Justice Myers was counsel for the board, this being one of his last cases before elevation to the Bench.—Press Association.
