ARAWAS PROTEST
HOSPITAL BOARD CHAIRMAN’S REMARKS NATIVE REPRESENTATION IN PARLIAMENT [Per Press Association.] Hamilton, Sept. 4. At the recent conference of Hospital Boards on the cost of treating Maori patients, Mr. Campbell Johnstone, chairman of the Waikato Board, criticised the system of native representation in Parliament and some speakers opposed having a Maori as Native Minister. Protesting against these sentiments, Himana Pokiha, chairman of the Arawa Development League, telegraphed Mr. Johnstone:— “The Arawas unitedly protest against the views expressed regarding Sir Apirana Ngata and consider them a deep outrage to him and to those he represents. If the prestige of British ideals rests only on such intolerance and racial prejudice and not on freedom and proved capacity then tho friendship now existing between Maori and pakeha will be destroyed. The Arawas have a higher conception of Britain’s love, true Christian principles and inherent respect for justice.” The message also protests against the introduction of personalities.
