At 1.45 p.m. yesterday the Hastings Fire Brigade was summoned to extinguish a grass fire on a vacant section in Beresford street, owned by Mr. Cooper. It appears that the grass was being burnt down to clear the growth, but the flames developed to an extent that whoever was engaged in the operation was unable to cope with the advance of the fire, which was threatening the fences and the neighbouring houses. The firemen. however, quickly subdued the outbreak before any damage was done. Mr. Cooper has donated £1 1/to the brigade's funds.

Set upon by two men whom he surprised attempting to enter his shop at the corner of Barrington and Somerfield streets, Christchurch, on Tuesday evening, F. Good fought valiantly to hold them while he called for assistance The men, however, were too strong, and in the end Good was left dazed by a kick in the neck, while the two men made for safety. The thieves had not been able to make an entry. Mr Good is considerably the worse for his experience, and it covered from head to foot with bruises. The dancers generally enjoyed themselves to the music supplied by Mrs Horne. The card tables were under the direction of Mr. A Jones, nnd Mr. J. Oueenan acted ns M.C. for the dancing.
