SHARE OF A GUARANTEE ", FAILURE OF DAIRY FARMERS UNION. ! CASE IN SUPREME COURT. « ~ Hamilton, Sept 3. I The failure of a dairy farmers } union which operated for seven yea. s 1 led to a lawsuit a.aong the guaran--1 tors of a £lOOO overdraft, in the } Supreme Court to-day Three guar--1 jntors, C. Parker, F. W. Thomas and • R. A Forsman, sued four others for J a share of the guarantee. The case turned on the contention 1 of the defendants that their signa--1 tures to the guarantee were obtained 1 on the understanding that it was not 1 effective unless a total ot 20 signa- [ tures was obtained. Mr. Justice I Ostler held that this was not proved • but that it was agreed that some I additional signatures should be obi tained. whereas only one was added I He therefore refused to make an i order against the two defendants I H. R. J. Southee and B. fl. Barlow | who disputed the claim, but made an I order against A. E. Fear and J i Livingstone, who had admitted lia- [ bility at the beginning of the heari ins.

TRADE UNION COUNCIL BEN TILLETT’S SUGGESTION. PERIODICAL INTER-DOMINION CONFERENCE. (United Press Association—Bv CableCopyright.) I Australian and N.Z. Press Association.] London, Sept. 2 In his presidential address to the Trade Union Council at Belfast Mr. Ben Tillett suggested holding a periodical inter-Doininion conference of organised Labour throughout the Empire either concurrently with the official Imperial Conference or independently. Such conference, be said, would consolidate organised Labour thioughout the British Commonwealth. MOVE APPROVED BY PRESS. London, Sept. 3. Hie “Daily Telegraph” says: “Mr. Ben Tillett's address at the T.U.C. in which he suggested inter-Dominion coni? rence of organised Labour, will be n,nd with no little astonishment. His darling njpe is no longer to smash the present organisation of industry, but to acquire for the representatives of Labour a recognised p'r .'a in its direction and control. If tlir requisite machinery is once firmly eilablished, the status of trade unionism will be immensely improved.” The “Daily Chrouicls”- also »f- '

presses the opinion that organised Labour has moved a long way from the errors of 1926. “We agree with Mr Tillett that everything possible should be done to build up a trade with the dominions. He throws out a practical suggestion that interDominion conferences of organised Labour should be held.” The “Morning Post” says: “We gather from the address that at last tho Trade Union Congress begins to realise the importance of the British Empire to the British workman. If the congress realises the value of the Empire to the workers, let it restrain Mr. Snowden from doing away with preference to the dominions.” The “Daily News” entitles its leader “Trade Unions Look Ahead.” It specially approves of periodic conferences of organised Labour throughout the Empire.
