TRANSPORT PROBLEMS
CABINET CONSIDERATION. BILL EXPECTED THIS WEEK. Cabinet on Monday gave full con sideration to the draft of the Transport Bill which is expected to be ir traduced mt.) tlie House of Rcp•e«entatives -.his v-eek. Although the Government's policy in regard to transport was stated on broad lines in the Budget as aiming at, among other objects, co ordinating railway and motor toad construction policies and bringing about co-ordination between road end rail transport services, the details of the legislation are being awaited with apprehension by some members (states the “Dominion”), particularly those who also represent local interests.
Several members spoken to on Monday expressed fears that the bill might seek to help the railways at the expense of the motor services, while one said he would feel moie reassured when he knew that no attempt was to be made to clip the wings of local bodies in regard to their licensing powers. In reply to a question on Monday night (the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) announced his intention of having the bill, after its appearance, referred to a Select Committee, so that evidence from the interests concerned could be taken There would be no attempt Ip rush legislation of that nature through the House, he said.
