THE WEATHER FOR AUGUST

LIGHT BANFALL AND HEATS FROSTS. Mr H. N. Powler advises us that during August rain fell on fifteen days but the falls were so light—no fall for any 24 hour period totalling lin. —that 2.43 inches was all that was recorded in Hastings for the month. The amounts of rain and dates were: —sth, .02; 7th, .03; Bth, .75; 9th, .02; 10th, .02; 11th .02; 17th. .01; 19th, .03; 20th, .90; '2lst, .30; 22nd .03; 23rd, .10; 25th, .02; 26th, .17;’ 27th, .01. Eighteen frosts were recorded, the most severe being on the 15th of the month when 14 degrees of frost was experienced. The comparative severity of frosts on various days will bo seen from the following:—lst, 3deg; 2nd, 13deg; 3rd, lldeg; sth, lldeg; Sth, Bdeg; 10th, sdeg; 11th 3<leg; 12th, lldeg; 13th, Bdeg; 14thJ Odeg; 15th, 14deg; 16th, 6deg; 25th, sdeg; 26th sdcg; 28th, lOdeg; 29th, Bdcg.; 20th, 7deg. The prevailing winds were:—N.E. 2 days, S.E. 2 days, 8. 8 days, B.W. 15 days, W. 4 days. At Whana Whana, Mr G. R. Beamish recorded a total of 3.28 inches, rain having fallen on 14 days. The heaviest fall of 1.23 inches being recorded on 7th August. Maraekakaho Station was slightly above Hastings during the last month, having had 2.70 inches, while Mr B. Chambers at To Mata recorded 2.5 inches. Waipoapoa Station again forwards the heaviest fall for the district with 6.98 inches. Though slightly wetter than Juno or July, the past month has been by no means unusually wet. Last year in August the following rainfalls were re corded:—Te Mata 3.71 inches, Waipopoa 11.14 inches, Whana Whana 5.15 inches, Napier 4.56 inches. The absence of rain and especially cold southerly rain with wind, has enabled lambing to proceed with unusually few casualties caused by inclement weather Given another fortnight of fine weather farmers should have little to complain of on the score of lambing percentages.
