GENERAL NOTES Countersign has been retired from racing and will be mated with Nigbtraid » * * • Disorder, a three-year-old filly by The Ace from Scrimmage, is a promising member of the team which Cutts Brothers have in preparation at Ricearton for spring engagements (says an exchange). She did not race as a two-year-old until the autumn, when she started four times. Her first appearance was made at Trentham, where she ran a dead-hea t with Eaglet, who was giving away a lot of weight. Her third in the Canterbury Challenge Stakes was another useful effort, hot at each of. those meetings she failed to repent the form. She has done well through the winter, and she looks n useful prospect, judged on two of her races, though the other two are black marks, which leave doubts, in the meantime, regarding her racing qualities.

An unpleasant feature, of the Dannerirke meeting last week was the rough riding in several of the races (writes “Vedette.") There were some inquiries by stewards. I»i |! no action was taken, .q ill froin Un

Courageous-Black Mint incident. The necessity for strict supervision of tills dangerous practice is obvious. Such supervision is essentially a matter for experts. Mention of this subject leads the writer to reaffirm tlio opinion so frequently expressed in these columns: that the present system of divided control is w t satisfactory. The paid or stipendiary steward, who is appointed because of his expert knowledge of all matters relating to racing has little or no adjudicative power. This is unfortunate, for no matter how sincere and conscientious a local amateur steward may be it stands to reason that his experience and capacity cannot be compared with ths judgment of a professional official, who is, moreover, unhampered bv local considerations. Disinterested observers, who have the true interests of _ racing at heart, are firmly of the opinion that a reform of the existing system is long overdue, » » • The older generation of racing men will regret to hear of the death of the once well known trainer Francis Jeremiah (“Jerry”) McHugh, which took place at his home at Onehunga last Monday. His chief successes were with the horses of the late Mr Samuel Bradley, whose death was announced only a few weeks back, among them being the N.Z. Cup winner Impulse, the Auckland Cup winner Wariki and the Wanganui Cup winner Swordfish. Mr. McHugh, who was in his 73rd year, retired 10 years ago. His health had been failing for some time prior to denth. He is survived by Mrs McHugh, a daughter, and a granddaughter.
