WAIKATO BEATS CANTERBURY. A FAST, CLOSE GAME. Hamilton, Sept 2. A fast close game was played between Waikato and Canterbury today, the former winning by 21 to 17. Waikato secured three penalties, three tries and a goal from a mark, Canterbury getting five tries, one of which was converted. Both sides received an even share of the ball. The home forwards showed superiority in the loose, and the backs were very evenly matched, but the home side s tackling prevented several sure tries. Halstead s goal-kicking resulted in Waikato winning. Anderson and Allen were the best backs, and Buckingham was very fast and clever at half. Chapman did much spoiling work. Cameron, Kelk and Hooper were the best of the forwards. Harris kicked well for Canterbury, while Merritt was useful on attack and defence. Hart and Mullan played handy games. Man ning and Burrows were the best forwards. Scrimshaw scored two tries. Lilburne expects to l>e fit to take the field against Wellington on Saturday. Steel is now on the injured list. An

extra man will be required for Saturday’s game. AUCKLAND REFEREES. Auckland, Sept. 2. At a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees’ Association the secretary was instructed to write to the executive of the New- Zealand Rugby Referees’ Association asking what reason, if any, can be given by its representative on the appointments committee for Auckland referees receiving only three appointments by that body during the past 16 years; also, what steps the executive has taken to ensure that Auckland referees are to be appointed for further New Zealand Rugby Union matches.
