THE PICTURE HOUSES
'COSY DE LUXE. Thoso who enjoy comedy at its best should see the Universal talking picture “Modern Love,” which opened Saturday at the Cosy Theatre. The story is based on modern marriage, that is, marriage on a fifty-fifty basis. However, it is only fair to state that in “Modern Love,” not only is the marriage a fifty-fifty business arrange ment, but in order that- the young wife might not lose her secret. Ono wonders how so many amusing complications can be packed into one film without straining for effects and without overburdening it with innumerable gags. The fact that both these defects have been avoided is perhaps tho highest compliment that can bo paid the writer, the director and the cast. “Romance of the Underworld,” starring Mary Astar, is also shown. MUNICIPAL. Showing at the Municipal Theatre to-night for tho last time, British Dominion Films present Dorothy Seacombo as tho sweetheart of a Scotland Yard detective. Her brother has invented a television sot, but for financial reasons has sold his original invention to an outsider. Scotland Yard is given work by a sequence of big bank robberies, which are perpetrated under extraordinary circumstances. Containtly altered combinations prove no deterrent, and the crimes are committed a couple of hours after everything seemed safe. Dorothy’s lover is at the head of the forces detailed on the job and suspicion eventually falls on both him and the girl. Following a certain clue, the detective figures out that television has something to do with the mystery, and after a time he gets evidence that this is right. The investifation then narrows down to a discovery of just who the guilty party is. Dorothy's brother gets all tho attention until the detective gets information which allots for a swoop while the thieves arc in the act of carrying out a robbery. Then it is that the shadow of guilt is lifted from the suspected persons and the real crook unmasked.
