A moment after the ball was in play the crowd were delighted when the old champion, M. Brownlie, gained from a throw-in and made a splendid dash, beating off a number of opponents before being brought down. From a following line-out the Bay forwards won the fight for the ball and Setford galloped away and passed to Appleby, who carried on but later was pushed out. The visitors were battling strongly, warmly contesting every inch of ■round. From the centre line Gillespie broke away and passed on to Grenside, the latter, however, having no room to run could not carry on. Twice the Bay attempted to break through when within a few yards of the visitors’ goal-line. Knocks-on when the leather was thrown out nullified the prospects. The defence temporarily relieved the pressure upon them, but a free kick against them saw Grenside make a great shot at the goal from the sideline. The leather fell just outside the pbsts. Play went across the field and the visitors were again penalised. Bert had another attempt to goal from the side-line with the same result.

From a throw-in Campbell and Wilson got away and passed to Setford. who made a determined bid for the line, but found Johnston safe as full-back. Again Setford opened up the play. Taking a pass from the scrum he short-kicked to Strange, who w»s caught in possession. Good play by Parsons. Tataua and Conrad brought the game back to midfield. M. Brownlie was up again in a short, lively rush and on losing possession the visitors swung into attack, taking all before them down tbe field. The movement ended in Parata finishing off a great movement and equalising the score. Hawke’s Bay 5 Manawhenua 5 The spectators were delighted with the manner in which Steere, Brownlip, Campbell and McKay led the Barites down to the visitors’ corner. Although heavy onslaughts were launched the defence held intact until the ball went to Setford, which meant danger for the visitors. Smith took the pass and made a splendid dash for the line to ground near the poets, Grenside adding the extra points.

Hawke’s Bay 10 Manawhenua 5 Within half a minute the visitors took the spectators completely by surprise when they swept down the field, completely overwhelming the Bayites. Bull scored well out and Riddell just faded to equalise the score.

Hawke's Bay 10 Manawhenua 10 Hawke’s Bay kicked oft and took the opposition by complete surprise. Never were they in the picture McKay beat them all to score well out. Grenside, although kicking well, just failed to raise the flag. Hawke’s Bay 18 Manawhenua 8 The Bayites again attacked and after a short period Setford and Grenside got away, gaining to the twenty-five flag before losing possession. Desperate play followed in the comer, the Magpies strenuously battling to get through. Grenside tried to “dummy” the defenders but it did not work. Now followed the greatest moment of the game. From their own corner Parsons, Crawford, Conrad, and Parata got away and took the ball to mid-field where Akuira and Riddell carried on, the latter passing on to Walker when tackled by Hickling. The speedy winger raced on to score near the corner, amid cheers. Riddell’s’shot at the goal fell just outside the posts. Hawke’s Bay 13 Manawhenua II It was anybody’s game with the ball being handled freely and the forwards playing like backs. The crowd were beng treated to some splendid Rugby. A spectacular passing rush by Bull. Riddell. Akuira. Bevan and Walker looked dangerous for the Bay but Grenside secured and kicked well oct. Further kicking by the Bay winger gave the visitors a lot of extra running about. The spell ended with the score: Hawke’s Bay 13 Manawhenua 11

On changing over the Bay, with the sun now at their backs, made a sweeping rush down to the visitors’ twenty-five flag. From the line-ont Beckett sent Smith and Gillespie away, the latter passing in-field, to

Setford, who failed to gather in. The next attack took the Bayites close into the visitors’ corner.. Grenside was unable to clear and lost possession, and the siege was raised, enabling Manawhenua to invade the opposing team’s territory, Ridell and Akuira got the ball out to Walker, who made a sensational dash for the line. Beating off Appleby and Setford, ho was accounted for by Hickling. From a line-out the Bay gained an advantage, but. Johnston, taking a mark, put in a most useful kick. The Magpies had now crossed tbe centre line and made the most of the game. Wilson, Smith, Gillespie and Setford broke away, but Johnston made a brilliant save on the corner. Parsons, Totana, Crawford and Conrad, with tho ball at their feet, galloped off down the field, until Walker joined in. He short-punted over Hickling’s head, but ovor-ran the ball, and Gillespie fell on it, and made a splendid and timely save. Again Walker, who possessed plenty of speed, raced away, but found the room too limited, and Setford gained possession to relieve with a great kick into touch. In a moment the crowd rose to its feet when McKay, leading the Magpies, broke through and passed all the opposition. Although he had a safe margin, McKay went only a few yards off the line. He elected to pass the leather out, and it went astray, a certain try being lost. Effective line kicking by Manawhenua put them on the attack. Again tho Bayites were off. Smith, securing, got away and steadily increased his lead from tho opposition. Ho sent the ball on to Grenside, who was unable to gather a difficult pass. Play was transferred back and across the field, where Grenside, wfth a sensational run, beat off his opponents to rnn round and score behind tho posts. The kick was disallowed. Hawke’s Bay 16 Manawhenua 11 The Bay again looked like scoring when Gemmell, Wilson, Brownlie and Campbell broke away. McKay carried the ball on, but was tackled within a couple of yards of the line. Once more the Bay backs figured in a try-getting movement, which ended in Smith just beating three opponents in a race for the ball some yards behind the lino. In the race, in which all four players foil together, Walker was injured, and had to retire. Setford converted.

Hawke’s Bay 21 Manawhenua 11 Play was taken again to tho visitors’ comer, Appleby making two attempts to cross near tho flag. A free kick to tho visitors from tho goal-lino went to Hickling, who kicked down. Johnston was smothered before he could clear, which meant trouble for tbe visitors. Brownlie got over, but his pass being forward, gave relief to the visitors. A moment later the Magpies were back again, Wilson. Gemmell, Heffernan and Steere having battled their way through, the last-named scoring in a handy position. The try went uncrowned.

Hawke’s Bay 24 Manawhenua 11 The Bay were again attacking w|ren a try was given away. The visitors kicked down from their goalline, Smith taking the ball, hut on “dummying” he was caught in pos session. Setford was unable to gather in a\id Strange, who was bandy, gathered up the ball with only Hickling to beat. A great sprint gave him a clear field, and racing on, he covered three quarters of the arena to score amid great enthusiasm- The kick at goal failed. Manawhenua 14 Hawke’s Bay 24 Encouraged by this score the visitors immediately launched a hot offensive. A kick by Setford was smoth ered, and would have meant trouble for the Black and Whites had Akuira been able to gather in tho leather. Manawhenua then took play across the field, where Bevan was almost over. Now followed a really sensational piece of the game. Tho Bayites from their own twenty-five got away, and Setford, having a clear field made a dash for the line. His speed, however, was not sustained, and ho was well overtaken and tackled by strange. Instantly the visitors were awuy with the ball and raced down threequarters of the field. Strange dashed over near the corner. Riddell converted with a great kick.
